Ideal tiers to play and some thoughts.

Most people can agree that T7 is king because T9 is generally only played to get to T10 and T10's are much better than 9's in most cases. My Z-46, Fletcher and Neptune would like to argue they can compete with T10's but they are the exception not the norm.

It is not likely to be bottom tier in a T7 game.

So outside of 7 are there any other ideal tiers? Maybe 4? Because 4 either fights 3 and 4 or 4 and 5, it never really has a chance of being up tiered by 2. Also most 4's are strong. I guess tier 10 could be called optimal as well.

It's interesting that only 3 tiers are really considered to be optimal. What could be adjusted to extend or adjust this range? Or should it even be played with? Just something I was pondering tonight.

Since T4 and below are protected  (unless population is low) I'd consider those to be ideal.

Uptiering is a major issue, but as you said some ships can scale well. I enjoy T5, but Kami-R scales well.

IMO, tiers only deal with earnings. Everything is all mucked up with MM -/+, you can't really choose a tier, instead a range.

That sounds legit to me.  Tier VII is indeed a fun tier and most of the times it is actually balanced pretty well, even when you face Tier IXs you aren't hopelessly outclassed and there are usually only three or so.

a side note - what are some Tier IX ships considered to be amazing and worth keeping?  What is the E 50/E 75/T-54 of the game, for those who have played tanks?

Depends if the classes can fulfill their roles reasonably, I would think.

Past T7, BBs tend to camp more along with everything else. Radar encourages more camping if nobody has the balls to push up, and when a CV's around, yoloing is basically a death sentence either to its strike or the permaspotting. So T6 and below reasonably work for Ranked.

Of course, T8-10 could be made viable too, if stealth builds cannot be brought into ranked, but I'm not sure people would accept that.

For me, it depends as much on the ship as the Tier. Fujin/Kamikaze R scale just fine thanks.  Same for Gremyaschy.  Konig is pretty tough and can work OK despite being uptiered. OTOH, Murmansk used to be lots of fun but it does not do well in a sea of Scharnhorsts. Kutuzov doesn't care what Tier you are - you still burn. In contrast, Edinburgh is really hard to play in a T8-10 match (at least for me). North Carolina is a great ship... until you meet Yamato.

Yes, Tier 7 seems to be a sweet spot. Great variety of ships, both Premium and tech tree. Fiji and Shchors are both strong, but in very different ways. Same with Nagato and Scharnhorst. Want torps?  Shiratsuyu. Want speed and flames? Leningrad.  (Although I miss the old T7 Kiev.)

You seem to have the right conclusions already. Every boat I've played at Tier 7 has been enjoyable, even the Pensacola (pre-concealment buff). Actually, I think the Pensacola is my all-time best boat stat wise. Tier 4 is a good place as well, although like @Wulfgarn said the Kamikaze sisters scale really well. At tier 5 they are OP as all hell and tier 7 they're competitive provided you don't run into a knife fighting DD without a means of easy escape.

I enjoy tier five. The Texas is alright, and the Fujin and Kamikazes are just fine. Tier eight is also one of my favourites with the Mogami, Prinz Eugen, Takao, and the Lo Yang.

As most have said, for the best matchmaking spread, the best tiers are typically T4 and T7.

But some don't so much choose tiers to play as they just play the ships they like, regardless of what tier they are in.

With that being said, there are a lot of ships out there that scale well and have no problem being bottom-tiered, namely:

  • Scharnhorst
  • Udaloi
  • Belfast
  • Bismarck/Tirpitz
  • Fletcher
  • Kiev
  • Kutuzov
  • Gremyashchy

The sad thing is that if WoW would implement +1 matchmaking across the boards EVERY tiers matchmaking would be like that.

But who needs fair play?

T10. Always top dog. And with the new prem camos, it's really easy and profitable to spam your favourite t10 ship if you play well.

Depending on the time of day, T8 can be enjoyable as well because T8's are not getting uptiered into T9 and T10 all the time and plenty of T8s are in queue to fill an entire match.

Lol. Anyone know what time that is? I'd love to play my T8 ships outside of a T10 match

That's because I don't think Hipper stacks up that well against T10's.

I generally find that I get a majority of T8 matches when there are a lot of players on the server. Usually around 10k players, which seems to be enough to saturate the queue with plenty of T8s(and possibly enough T6s) that they can have their own top tier games or games that only include a handful of T9 ships.

Got to Tier 8 (Benson) but found that in some matches I would lose cedits. Just took it that Tier 7 must be my optimum Tier for F2P (without premium or signals etc).

It's a shame as I was looking forward to the Fletcher, but the way premium time is currently worked - no thank you. Still a great game!:Smile_Default:

The only fair fight is the one you win. :Smile_honoring:

Well here is something.

If the tier spread was + or - 1 all the time, then tier 10's would only fight 9's.. Man tier 8 premiums would have a field day. I think they would be the top boats to play bar none.

Perhaps I am alone in this view, but I see a sort of waste land at tier 7.  With the notable exceptions of OPtoWinfast, Scharnhorst, Sims and Leningrad I struggle to conjure a single ship at tier I enjoy.  Note: I don't own Belfast, but I imagine anything with an advantage that large must be fun.

Similarly, I find the German tier 8 ships up tier horribly... Especially with their own tech tree.  Hipper is not bringing much to the table in a tier 10 match - against my Hindenburg I almost feel bad sinking then - sort of a "bless your heart for trying."  Bismarck is even worse off, not just against FDG and GK, but against high tier cruisers in general. Bis and Tirpitz are, again, ships I Love to see in Hindenburg - they eat massive damage from whatevs I want to shoot at them with little ability to retaliate.
