How are we supposed to learn to carrier? At tier IV we don't get manual drops so I feel like we'll get to tier VI without any idea of how to manual drop or strafe which makes me extremely leery of even trying to play carriers since there's no way for me to learn how.

Does anyone have any advice on how to learn to carrier?

Play or free exp to tier 6 however you like, but then play some kind of co-op or operation at tier 6 to learn about manual drops and strafes.

The only problem with strafes in co-op is that the bots generally aren't as tricky to strafe as human players would be. So you can learn the basics, but to get better at timing strafes you have to simply play randoms.

You can learn the basics in Co-op, but in the end the real experience comes from just grinding out Random games. Everyone else going down the CV lines is in the same boat learning the hard way at T6. I could see it these past few days while playing lots of Ryuujou, T6 is the new T4.

There's no easy way, really. It's the most challenging class to play imo.

1) Watch a few tutorial videos to learn about the control.

2) Open a training room with enemy disabled bots and customize your controls to a way you are comfortable with.

3) Try one or a few coop games until you start feeling a bit more comfortable

4) Jump into random once you feel you can controls your planes

5) Always be open minded and try to learn from your mistakes (getting strafed, attacking a ship with too much AA, etc.)

Get used to the interface (which folks consider bad) and controlling your flights first, and you can worry about manual drops later when you get it.

I've never used manual drop until sometime live, and there was no such thing as strafe in my days...of all things, I learned manual drop from using dive bomber...

Manual attacks are incredibly important to learn, but not the only thing to learn. Since you can't work on manual drops at t4 and 5, and there's very little AA to learn to deal with, all you can do is practice positioning and coordinating strikes.

Make strafing the first manual thing you learn.  That way you can do a better job keeping the other CV at bay by taking out his strike planes and his fighters.  While this is going on your team basically doesn't have to worry as much about planes attacking them, while they are attacking they are reducing the AA effectiveness of the enemy team.  Be picky about your targets when you see T7 and above ships.  Look for a ship that is off by itself, it is just asking for a CV to come after it.  IJN and the Germans especially the BBs are very good targets with low AA.  You catch one of them alone that is where you strike.  Still perfecting the manual stuff myself.  Also study the Tech Tree you will find the USN ships have some of the best AA and should be avoided till absolutely necessary

Learning to play carrier is the same as you learned to play this game in the other ships.  Simply take the time to invest in it and you will improve with games.

To get a head start there are several youtube videos you can search for :)

Learn the basics at t4/5 Then at t6 hold alt and learn to aim

This makes sense to me.  I just recently started playing CV.  Played the Hosho in Coop 10 or 20 games first just to get used to the weird UI and controls.  I've been playing the Hosho in Random and have started the Ryujo in Coop.  No, you can't strafe or manual drop.  However, you can learn to group your planes, use your fighter(s) to scout for the team and protect your assault planes, and identify targets.  It's a heck of a lot easier to grasp these basics before discovering what a Cleveland with Defensive AA does when you let your torpedo bombers head back to your ship and fly over him.  Ugh.

I think it would be unfair to your teammates to Free XP up to Tier 6 and start there.  Just too much to learn.

ETA:

After watching half of the video above, I went into Training Room with more knowledge about controlling groups of planes.  What a difference!  I also discovered just how hard it is to sink a Nicholas with a Ryujo.  Next up is CV vs. CV ...
