Thoughts on German HE pen buff.

Initially I thought this was crap. However after playing with the PE about 10 matches since the switch - I've found the pen changes to be just what the doctor ordered. Now I have an ammo choice for every situation when I'm playing her. Battleships are no longer immune to me! In comparison to something like a New Orleans at the tier - I much prefer the velocity of the hippers guns at the cost of some alpha and ROF for long range HE spam.

It's nice, but not likely to get my Königsberg, Graf Spee, Nürnberg, Hipper, Roon, and Hindenberg off of their 90% AP diet of shred everything in sight. Case and point: Nürnberg, an AP overpen at 390 per shot still does more damage to partially damage saturated area than a HE hit at 281 under those conditions (which are not uncommon).

As much as I appreciate every sign of love towards the german Cruisers, I don't really feel that much of an improvement. AP remains as my key ammo, I still fire it at almost everything. The low damage of the HE somewhat discourages the usage of High Explosive.

yes it does

 

150mm / 6 = 25mm

150mm / 6 * 1.3 = 32.5mm

150mm / 4 = 37.5mm

150mm / 4 * 1.3 = 48.75

 

Typical BB armor in T6/7: 25mm, occasional 30mm and 40mm deck

Those German CLs get freed up 4 critical points to dump into something else.  That's a pretty d@mn big deal IMO.
