This place looks crazy.

They grow bigger and bigger --- ports for the ever growing megaships of the world.

Want to work for the modern shipping industry?  Do you have what it takes to work there?

The prototype for island building in the South China Sea. I'll step off my soap box now.

Thanks for sharing.

God it's like a city made out of piles of shipping crates... something really off putting about it. I feel like I'd be really uncomfortable being in the middle of that sort of landscape.

I worked for 4 years as a merchant marine officer on container ships. Let's just say my feelings are too complex for mobile forum browsing.

Ive been in the ports at Long Beach, Oakland, Newark and a few others when I used to haul containers (trucking.).  It's a whole different world.  The skill some of those crane operators have is amazing, the spotters help a lot too.

I've been to Jebel Ali port a lot of times (Jebel Ali is essentially the port city which serves Dubai - it's about an hour south west of Dubai down the coast of the Persian Gulf) and I can hardly imagine a place more like what hell itself must be link. It's hot as fu[CENCORED] at all times. The land is inhospitable and desolate. The air is polluted and foul and everything reeks of grease and soot and fuel. Just to add that ambiance of hell, there are facilities all over the place that are flaring off waste gases, so at night you've got the orange glow and flickering of fires all around. Until very recently, Jebel Ali Port was the biggest port in the world.

Whole-heartedly concur !  sailed 12 years off & on, AB/ Bosun or 3rd Mate between MAERSK & HAPAG-LLOYD, several research vessels.  JAFZ reeks to high hell, but was always busy 24/7.  Shanghai was better, but was always a navigation nightmare getting to berth.

I always enjoyed the North Atlantic runs: Felixstowe, Wilhelmshaven, Hamburg,  over to the States & back. Mediterranean rotaries were always Fun, kicking boxes between North Africa & southern Europe. short runs, good overtime.

There was a lot more to this post, but it got deleted when the forum restarted. I was in mid type when that happened. Too lazy to write the rest of this.
