But it’s outside the city’s purview to use public funds for something that has always been a nonprofit, private enterprise.”

“We appreciated the significance of the site,” he said, “but it’s become a liability at this point, and that’s a shame.”

IF the city wanted to do something about it the city could do something about it... maybe  some larger naval museum can pitch in and save her?

I suspect there are any number of ways of getting her out of the river are possible as well... imagine a few hundred helium filled weather balloons tied to her hull to lift her up out of the water... if they want to save her they can.

If they don't want the sub, I'll take it. I can start my own fleet.

If they got a loan to restore it would that be a Prime Sub Loan?

But no seriously they should seek donations. Try and save it. The last of its kind and all that.

Sadly they did. It says in the article that they were barely able to raise $25 dollars.

You have a memorial that's staying, in the area of the sub, with plans to build a hotel and shopping area. Aside from the fact of I'm sure if it wanted the city could get funds some way, no one with this grand development plan, where it was drawing enough attention as a museum and all, had it run through their brain to link it and the memorial and incorporate a piece of history, that you won't find anywhere else, into the development say near by the hotel or shopping area where people have a short walk to access it for tours and can even have some small shop nearby with various things that relate to sell and go along with helping maintain it and all, with, because they undoubtedly want money themselves, mark up to cover it with a little cash to boot. Or just the good PR of "Hey, were helping save this piece of history and all profits from this store here near it go to help keep it maintained for generations to come" etc that may draw more crowds to the shops and all cause hey, they don't come across as careless money grubbing business people.

They should maybe try again now if the article circulates more, may well get more attention, from bigger spenders.

It is sad how many great warships are lying in dis-repair because no one cares. The TX is perhaps the worst example.

But, if I read the article correctly, the developers don't even own the rive the sub is on, so legally they can't touch it. I know the museum is toast, but they actually can't do anything to the SS itself. And it sounds like it would take a ton of money even to remove it. Maybe the developer will realize it would be better to put some money into restoring the sub and using it as an attraction, rather than having to spend massive bucks to get the river dredged or the sub floated out.

I missed that part... that's just sad.

...very sub-par results.

There are already quite a few museum subs so unless there is something really special about this one it is likely going to be scraped. Personally I would permanently dry dock it and make it part of the development.

Well if the article is to believed this one is really special because it was built to take on U-Boats...can't think of another submarine we built during WWII that we built with the idea of taking on U-Boats.

They did very little advertising when the museum was open and I doubt it occurred to them to advertise the go-fund-me.  How many people just peruse go-fund-me to see what they can throw money at?  I'm sure nobody was aware of the effort.

As far as new location, it's been shown that sub museums don't have to be on water, nor even the subs in one piece, to have a nice, attractive, and popular place to visit.  And what is the point of allowing the memorial to stay if they are getting rid of everything else?

I look at what they did to the USS Drum..

USS Drum

They did a very good job on the sub that actually sank the Mutsu on it's 4th war patrol with an errantly laid mine.

.. and they never got credit for it since the IJN was too busy pointing fingers at each other or blaming a disgruntled seaman.

The various intel corps concluded it would be far more demoralizing for the Japanese to keep the USS Drum's visit a secret.

I didn't believe it myself until I looked into the records.  The reliability of those mines was questionable, and the batteries were near the end of their life.

Secondary detonations are a killer.

I'd say you're quite misinformed if you believe the Texas is in disrepair because no one cares about it.

It's a 100+ year old ship sitting in salt water and it's going to have problems. Those leaks are being fixed and the ship is being righted. It's not the first time it's happened, and it's not the first time a lot of time & money have been spent to repair it.

There's a lot of info out there about efforts to preserve her. Read up a bit and I think you'll find that a leaky hull does not equate to a ship that's not cared for.

It seems maintaining old naval vessels is pretty expensive... I guess difficult for small organizations to do for very long...

I believe the Navy already threatened to take her back a couple years ago due the poor condition she is in, for the Navy too give a ship to a museum or had to be kept in good condition and if they fail they have the right to take back that vessel

The Ling is a Balao class, 120 were built and served in the Pacific theater. I think the u-boat thing is nonsense

Well more of this kind, less of the touristy kind. I do wish there were naval museums around here. Once I move I'll probably make the drive to visit the USS Texas.

WG should sell a boat for a week and donate all funds to the Ling.

It kinda of sounds like this group mismanaged the whole museum. I doubt WG should donate to this group, unless they partner with another museum or hire a better board.

Damage to USS North Carolina's hull that is being revealed.  Brackish water is hard on ships.

Later time the hull was painted was like the 50s right,?
