Tribals versus Gremyashchys

Seeing quite a flood of YouTube videos as the "other game" gets a new iteration of its naval warfare out, this time with Tribal and Project 7 class destroyers.  The interesting part is they pegged the Tribals at BR 3.0, and that's pretty low, which means reserving quite a lot of room up, in contrast of putting the post war Soviet sub chaser right at high.

Not going to link a video here, but its easy to find one.  iChase got one, so did Phlydaly, and soon everyone will have one up.

Other than the superficial resemblance of warships on a sea, its going to be a very different game, and one which you cannot bring your WoWs habits.

Destroyers vs. patrol boats, makes destroyers feel like battleships that instadelete the other ship.  Its a good idea that WoWs should never introduce patrol boats in the game.

It appears that the main armament can be selected among the different gunsets, and when one is selected, the others will be AI controlled.  That means you can go down and select for manual secondary control or AA control and shoot down that bomber looking to land one right on top of you.  This is going to be important since believe me, there is going to be player kamikazes here.  Dual purpose or not, you can use your main guns to hit a bomber if they are flying low enough.

The destroyers feel a lot tankier and HE isn't going to hurt them.  You're going to need AP and you better hit them at the right spot.  A destroyer will go sky high should you "ammo rack" it at the right place.

Torpedoes on the other hand, can sink you instantly.  Ships sink differently there, unlike in WoWs where in the death throes, a ship cracks up and rolls over.  In there, the ship sinks tail first, lifting its bow section to the air, then slips beneath the waves aft first. Which I thought, felt majestic if somewhat even religious.

The Tribals are definitely better than the Gremyaschyies as gun boats.  I notice that the game's space-time looks different, maybe real space-time, and not as compressed as WoWs, so the shells, even with lower muzzle velocities, don't arc as much.  However, something relatively close looks farther away.

The game's developers previously said they can't do bigger ships due to the real space-time simulation, but obviously eating their words now after this experiment.  However, the game's scope of space-time is set for tanks, and destroyer gun calibers are similar to tanks.  There is still a bigger question how they can fit bigger guns for bigger ships, if they plan to.  I do get the sense this might be as far as they can go, maybe at the most, cruisers, but not battleships or carriers, which even if they appear on the game, will be AI controlled and serve as mission anchors.

And remember this is the other game, which has respawns.  Just because you sink one guy, doesn't mean he's not coming back at you for revenge on a torpedo boat or a bomber with torpedoes.

WoWP also said ages ago that there'll be no bombers but now they're in ST. Who knows what playable ships WG will come up with in future: destroyer escorts, patrol boats, submarines.... :hiding:

If Haida doesn't come to WoWS soon then I might be willing to give WT a try just for the Tribal.

Destroyer Escorts are "big" enough for this game (WoWs) scale,  but the problem is that they are too slow to be competitive.  You can consider the Matsu/Tachibana class of "destroyer" to be destroyer escorts.  Under the USN's eyes, the Elbing class aka T-22, are considered Destroyer Escorts so effectively you already have a Destroyer Escort in the game. The V-25 torpedo boat is already the smallest vessel in WoWs, and some destroyer escorts exceed that.  But once again the problem is that they are slow, and sub 30 knot speeds makes them uncompetitive.

Other observations.

Torpedoes are at their real life speeds, which means they are very slow, since WG boosts 20 knots plus for this game.  But in the other game, they lose that 25 knots.  In Realistic Battles, ships have no reloads, unless said ship has a reload in real life.  Destroyers typically carry one set of reloads IRL, but there are some destroyers that don't, you shoot your load, that's it.  You really would depend less on your torpedoes, and more on your guns.

I wouldn't put it past WT to add in some kind of reload mechanic though for cases such as this. They already have it for tanks where you sit in a friendly cap circle to reload all weapons. I could see it being done for naval forces.

As for the actual mode, I've played it a few times already. Its really fun, though since its one the dev server not many people are on it sadly, which leads to a lot of 1v1 or 2v2 matches, which tend to slow down the action. The damage model of the ships definitely would allow them to make MUCH bigger ships though. All the mechanics are there in the game to make it work, they just need to tweak a couple of them and implement them into the naval mode.

It should get an automatic reload if you are in Arcade Battles.  Just like the aircraft do, once they used up their ammunition or bombs, and you don't need to a magic circle to do it, like the tanks in Arcade Battles do.

In Realistic Battles mode, you don't.  If its aircraft they need to return to base for ammo reloads and I would assume a ship has to do the same. But this mode is aimed at the harder core audience which might desire these type of constraints.

Hmm, I have seen to have forgotten that the Russian destroyers are actually Project 7U and not 7.  Project 7U is essentially what happens when you have a Gremyashchy with the Ognevoi's engines and twin funnels.  This particular type isn't in WoWs currently, but is not a paper ship.

Well, I was only using the cap circle as an example. I'm sure there are MUCH more elegant ways to doing it, like in the new pve mode that WG released. =P

Basically, have a cargo ship or something that you can fall back to to reload and repair to near or full health, get more crew ect, much like runways in RB

Sounds like a good idea.
