Are these people trying the game without accounts? Or people who can't think of their own usernames and are allocated one? Who are they?

If you're talking about the Bastion name it wasn't a joke.  As I recall he ran some kind of contest on his stream where viewers could vote for a new name for him and the Bastion name won.

 

He was horrified, but went along with it.

Flamu got his name changed because when OMNI crated their alt accounts to play on NA they all named themselves after Kim Jong Un. "KimJongOverpotates" in his case.
