Built my WoWS machine just after OBT (maybe a year and a half ago?) for something like ~$350, not counting peripherals. Most of the cost came from the $150 500GB SSD.

Been slowly upgrading the same machine in stages for about two decades now. Nothing is left of the original box, but I just buy parts to upgrade what I have, swapping everything out in stages. The last major upgrade I did was a new motherboard, ram, CPU and GFX card, about a year ago, $500. Kept the old HDD, case, PSU, keyboard, mouse, monitor.

My Win 10 (I like XP way more but progress, lol, you know) computer here (bought Aug 2016) is close to 2k Cdn built by a local computer store as a mid level gaming rig.

I'm no expert on what it has tho I did get one of the better graphics cards, enough RAM & a SSE hard drive.

I will not 'overclock' as this is just plain stupid (one day your comp kaputs & sayonara comp).

I have no problems downloading or being disconnected/ lagged like I used to have operating on my old XP system.

I scabbed a 10+ year old case to build my recent new system... In 2008 I left the computer industry and was surprised how much had changed and then how much hadn't... :D

really pleased with the state of Power Supplies ... it used to cost $150 to get a quiet 750wt ps... same on the cooling fans... bigger better quieter and cheaper ...maine boards cost about the same... 4x the mem for the same money... blisteringly fast compared to what was... esp with SSD's out...

(and to think I borrowed $2000 in 1990 to get a 386sx20 with a 30MB hard drive and 5-1/4 and 3-1/2 floppies on a 640 VGA monitor.... don't recall but I think it had 8mb or ram... or maybe only 4... it was so long ago... )

Currently using a 2nd generation i5 with a 1st gen i7 as a backup. Will or should have the new one in place this weekend. :)

I built mine myself for $900 a year and a half ago. Had the PSU kill itself with the GPU as well. replacement cost me a good chunk but I upgraded to a 1060 so now the parts put in cost about $1100. I am running max settings beautifully.

I built my computer in 2010 five years before I started gaming.

When I initially built it I had to buy a special case from Antec because the Radeon HD6970 Video Card was too long for to fit in the case.  What I ended up with is:  Antec 1100 case, ASUS Sabertooth X58 MB, ASUS XONAR DX 7.1 Audio Card, Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD for programs, Samsung 840 EVO1TB SSD for data storage,  i7 950 3.0 GHz CPU, 24 GB RAM,  Nvidia GeFORCE GTX 980, ANTEC 750W power supply.  Samsung 28 inch 4k display monitor, Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speakers, ELCOM Trackball mouse, WIN 10 64bit  My internet connection is with Comcast is a paltry 75Mbs.  which is just below nosebleed expense for the commercial speed.  I am hopeful the internet infrastructure in the USA will be upgraded to South Korea speeds under Pres Trump.

At the time I built it it was quite expensive.  I am now considering rebuilding it to upgrade MB and go to a LGA2011 socket, newer gen i7 processor, and 1 or 2 M2 SSD's, RAM between 24 and 32 GB.

The changes that take place in the industry do so at a consistently blistering pace... I start a computer company in 1993 and went through to 2008 with it and it never stopped or slowed down... the power of you avg video card is not more than an avg computer of that time.. let alone data access speeds etc etc.. . :)

Lert, I have been doing my computer since '94. Now I am running a 4th gen I5. (I have been a PC tech since '98). I still need to upgraded my memory up to at least 16gigs.

I currently use a 2012 model MacBook Pro with its hard-drive replace with SDD with updated software. Would have got a newer model if Apple hadn't discontinued manufacturing laptops with any form of drive. Got it stock for $400 due to trade back in 2014. Paid an additional $300 for the SDD replacement since the stock drive failed a year ago, so the total now is $700.

Built my own in 2014 and it was my first time building aswell. Costed about 800-900 AUD.
Had the Gainward 780Ti kill itself after a year. Then it went to RMA but the replacement also killed itself after another year. So i went out and bought a 1060
It was all G from there.

I seriously wish that I could either afford to or understand how to build a computer... I can and have built muscle cars, lifted jeeps, and street rods so why I can't understand building a computer bugs me.  As for the afford part... well... I need to stop building the other toys.  :Smile_teethhappy:

Stuff is seriously quite easy.

Essentially, your PC is made up of the Motherboard, CPU and its cooler (hydro or air cooled), GPU, RAM, PSU, Hard disk (+ SATA cords), CD drive (or not), Case, a PCIE slot wifi card (might not need) and some fans. That's all you need to buy.

After you've listed all of the parts that you want in your PC, Calculate how much power your PSU needs to pump out. this is very important. If your PSU cannot pump out enough juice your entire PC will fail. Do NOT accept PSU's below 80Plus silver certification. if the PSU kicks the bucket, your other parts will likely die with it. Pick an H series Motherboard over the Z series if you don't plan to Overclock or Dual GPU. You save money that way. Slide your First RAM stick in the slot thats closest to your CPU. then leave a space before the other stick (they are usually channeled 1,2,1,2).
When you buy a case, keep in mind that there are the regular sized ones (ATX) and the pocket-rocket sized ones (mini ATX). the dimensions of some of their parts are completely different. Make sure your parts fit before you buy a case.

When constructing, always ground yourself. avoid static electricity at all costs. It is a very big deal as one zap to the motherboard or GPU its pretty much totaled.
the PC case will come with It's own set of little power cords and what not. imo those are the trickiest part of the entire build. Its alot of reading your motherboard manual and delicate work plugging in those tiny pinheads.
Lastly, watch some videos on cable management. It is important as proper management helps ventilation by alot. I'd say that stuff can't be taught. Figuring it out your own way is alot more specific to your build.

That's pretty much all of the serious precautions. the rest is all market research to see what you want really :D

3 year old Dell XPS 8700.  $700.

Updating my original post...

Just got a new monitor and video card to improve gameplay.

Replaced the 19" dell flat screen with an AOC 22" flat screen and replaced the original AMD Radeon HD7570 1GB card with a new EVGA GeForce GTX 1050i (NVIDIA ) 4GG card (single fan version - case wouldn't allow for the dual fan ).

Monitor is nothing fancy but is better than what I had and let's me see better with my vision issues.

Card is a huge improvement over the OEM one. Fps jumped from around 25 all the way to 75-80!!!! Game plays a lot better now. And for some reason my PING dropped a huge amount too( from 80-100 all the way down to 30-35 )? No clue why or how but it did( card came with software to optimize game play so maybe it did something to help? ). Didn't have to change the OEM power supply either which was great.

All in all pretty happy with the upgrades.
