Improving my DD play

I have to say I love playing DDs, frustration sure, but always fun! I feel like I have hit a hard plateau skill wise. I have some great games, but a lot of meh ones. I struggle with balancing survival vs causing heavy damage. My gun hit rate is low, not sure if it's because of cruddy aim or me shooting too many shells at the wrong targets. When I try to play more conservatively and be more of a team player, I struggle hard with getting actual points. I mostly inhabit the higher tiers. Fletcher and Udaloi are my babies, I have a Grozovoi that I enjoy, and a Gearing that I have 1 game in. I'm also at tier VI and VII on the Japanese line. Oh and also just saving up enough to buy my Khab. Question is; I know I can always improve, just running out of ideas on how! I try and watch some of the unicums in the tube, but I'm not sure what to look for! Its tough out there guys! Thanks for any help you can give me!

Finally getting back to this thread! Still not able to help myself much… Never considered joining a clan, I feel like I don't  get the chance to play enough to justify it.  Still trying to work my way up the ladder!

Clan training, and divisioning with clan mates, can certainly improve your stats.

I approve of your responsible attitude of being concerned over being able to give as much back to your potential clan as they have to offer you. +1!

DD lines are way varied as to their playstyles, because no other class of ship offers such diversity within the class.

Aim can be improve with practice; luckily aim is the same at higher tiers as it is at lower, and the same in Co-op as in Random or Ranked. so practice, practice, practice, at whatever tier and in whatever mode you are most comfortable with.

You have named a number of ships, most of which have good or better gun characteristics. For Russian (or Anshan) DD's, stay at range and rain down fire. For USN / German DD's, close and kill. For IJN DD's, hide and torp.

When you watch the community contributors, after the first time, turn the sound down and just watch what they DO (and ignore all the noise they spout). What you are interested in are the TACTICS, not the commentary. Watch how they set up their ambushes, how they get into firing positions, etc. Remember they weren't talking all that smack while they were MAKING the damn vid; you don't need to hear it while you dissect their tactics on winning.

Division, division, division; there is no substitute for experience and being able to talk with divisionmates while playing and waiting to play can totally improve your game.

"He who turns and runs away, lives to fight yet another day!" NEVER be afraid to disengage and reacquire later.

Hope this helps!

The most important thing you can do to improve your DD play is to survive longer. I still struggle with being too aggressive and most of the time when I have bad games it is because I have over committed and left myself exposed.

Some tips to minimise your risk

- Know your enemy and what ships are your biggest threats - Stealthier DDs, radar cruisers, CV's.   What are their detection ranges/torp ranges and where will they most likely sail to. and plan to avoid these areas

- Always have an escape plan and never commit to an action where you cannot escape unless you are certain you have a big advantage over your foe.

- Don't fight over a cap unless you know you will win. If they have backup retreat and come back later.

- For attack runs work on a parabolic course so when you launch torps you are already turned away from the enemy and increasing range

- The mini map is your friend - the info here is invaluable for making decisions.

And then take a minute after each match to do an autopsy. What worked and why?  What didn't work and why? What should you have done differently etc....

I've played on your side before. You were a Fletcher and you have a name that's easy to remember. You are aggressive for sure. Not a bad thing.

Everything said above is good advice.

You'll find that thing that works for you. Good luck.

Sound advice on this thread. Consider focusing on one line a bit and the way that line/ship's guns and torps work. The RU guns are much easier to master than the USN. Also Noster and Flamu have some good vids. You'll love the Khab, it can be very addictive. Consider using heal at the top of the RU line over smoke, and the special engine boost mod 1 on them as well..
