105 [WWF2] CorvusBB39 Members 593 posts 15,821 battles Report post #3 Posted June 6, 2017 My dad was an aviation radioman flying in Avengers off of CVEs during the war (convoy escort missions mostly) and when I asked him what they'd done during Operation Overlord, replied, "Oh, we were tooling around the Bay of Biscay looking for any U-boats that sortied." 2,361 WanderingGhost Alpha Tester 5,281 posts 12,191 battles Report post #4 Posted June 6, 2017 Yeah, basically surface fleet had been almost scrapped or trapped at that point, U-boats were on the run, and side from the fact at that point even the Luftwaffe's back was pretty much broken they were doing fighter sweeps well ahead of the landings for anything even trying to get off the ground. Throw in the fact they were positive the attack was being led elsewhere by Patton's phantom force of balloons, too long to realize "nope, this is actually the invasion".
