So, I'm fairly new to the Hearts of Iron franchise, so I have a question concerning mechanics.

I'm playing as Italy, in the Axis and all that. It's August of '39, and Germany just kicked off the war by invading Poland. Thus, everyone's doing the allied dogpile onto the war. Germany has called me in, but I'm still not ready - I need another month or so, and then I'll be able to go.

What repercussions will I face if I refuse the call to arms? Are there any at all?

Thanks for the help!

Hope you're ready for Great Britain to send a thousand ships into the Mediterranean. In the first game I ever played they cut off all my troops in Africa.

Yeah, already having fun with that... Between the British and French, it's insane... Although I did claim the first BB kill of the war when Andrea Doria sunk Valiant at the battle of Malta, followed by another, unidentified BB.

The most annoying thing though is the game's insistence of you having perfect naval superiority before you try and conduct a landing with Marines. Despite the fact the enemy had no ships in the Tyrrhenian and I had 56, plus aerial superiority... They refused to sail. The same thing prevented me from snagging Malta early on... And since my main battlefleet is currently repairing after the huge Battle off off Malta... Well, at least they can't force a big fleet through anymore, either.

Overall, though, the war is going fairly well. I was able to seize Corsica, as well as all of Somalia without serious losses in Ethiopia. Libya has held up well, while my main force has punched right across North Africa. I've pushed the allies over the Suez, so part of that army is now finishing their main army in the Sinai, while the other part rolls down Egypt. I also punched past France's Alpine defenses and am just pushing out of Province and Alpes. The Germans are now just outside of Paris, as well.

Well get ready to have the UK WTFSTOMP you. I used to play HOI,  Dad got me into it because he played it and I always found the UK to either cheat or somehow MAGICALLY have reinforcements where before they had NONE.

Oh and the UK will never EVER surrender, even if you occupy all of the British Empire they will NEVER offer peace terms. You have to annex them...good luck with that!!!

Oh and Gibraltar? You CANNOT invade by sea so unless you have made a GREAT deal to Franco (hahahah yeah right) you will have to use paratroopers to grab "the rock".

Which means you need advanced transport planes because the ones you get until 1945 do NOT have the range from Corsica.

I always found the UK to be an annoyance more than an actually threat. All they ever do is harass you with their navy and air force, and do random naval landing that never amount to much. Russia on the other hand can get really dangerous if they are allowed to build up for too long.

Send your fleet on search and destroy Iirc. One of the map screens will show sea zone control. Also grab the no interior Africa movement mod. Otherwise things will get annoying.

Land troops and try to take the Suez. That will cut the British supply lines to India and will almost immobilize their fleet. You do not have to take all of Egypt just hold the two sides of the Suez and dig in, the UK troops will die off of attrition PLUS you will re-open your supply lines to your southern African forces in Ethiopia etc etc.

Be careful of UK troops magically appearing in Kuwait and attacking through Iraq, they seem to have a sneaky habit of doing that.

Also a mod that increases manpower you get from captured territory. Without it manpower shortages can ruin a lot of good games and makes playing as smaller nations nearly pointless.

HOI titles were fun.  It was always a nice challenge playing the Non-German Axis powers.  Japan was always a good one because time and attrition were against you.  China was a black hole to suck away your troops and supplies.  The fighting wasn't too hard, but the poor supply situation made pushes eventually dangerous, the further you got the less effective your troops were as supplies dwindled.  The US was eventually coming with their juggernaught.  Even if you wreck the early war USN ships, eventually the tidal wave of NEWER and BETTER stuff would arrive.  You need transports, escorting ships, but you don't have the industry to build them.  So if some US subs make their way to interdict, it was costly with losses that are hard to recover.

You didn't have the resources nor industry to keep up.  Even by inflicting lots of early war losses, even with securing the rich resources further south, etc, you simply didn't have the industry to keep up.  You could never build enough ships, planes, etc, while having the supplies to feed your forces.

And when you're just hanging by a thread in the Pacific, here come the Soviets!  There goes the Kwantung Army!

There was also some old WWII strategy games for the old 16-bit systems and Saturn, Koei's "Pacific Theater of Operations" series that were tremendous fun.  PTO II for the Sega Saturn even had a "card game" of sorts that takes place every month of the war.  The "game" was you, as the Navy Secretary of Japan or the US, as you work or argue with the Army and other leaders on grand strategy for the next time frame, and more importantly, fight over resources.

For the US, the Navy was eventually going to get tons and tons of resources whether you won or lost every month in the meetings.  But for resource-starved Japan, losing that month was a major setback.  You even had to work with the Army and try to accomodate their strategy for the overall effort, i.e. they have a corps of troops that are according to the agreed upon strategy, to seize an island in the Pacific.  You as the Navy furnished the transports and supporting fleet to make that a reality.  For a console, turn based game, the games had a lot of depth and lots of detail.

A video on the "card game" for the monthly strategic meetings.
