SMS Blucher (Armored Cruiser)

25.4 knots

12 x 210mm guns in hexagonal arrangement (like Nassau)

8 x 150mm secondary guns

16 x 88mm AA guns

Um, I don't know how to tell you this, but, this is way OP for a T3 cruiser.

Blücher would be overpowered at Tier 3. Although slow for a cruiser, she's pretty heavily armored, and very well-armed - remember, 8" guns on cruisers don't appear until Tier 5 in-game. I'd put Blücher at Tier 5.

Blucher, although one of the easier armored cruisers is somewhat tricky to implement in game.

The 8.2in armament is a real mixed bag, should have very old arc-y shells. Lowish ROF, but they are 8.2in's. The ship is a complete fortress by the standards of cruisers at almost any tier, but it's super slow.

If you bump it up the tiers, then the speed becomes a bigger and bigger hindrance - to tactical flexibility, ability to do the cruiser anti-DD job. If you push it up tiers you also get issues keeping the weak anti-air and being readily deleted by carriers which may be infrequent but isn't fun.

If you try and remedy these issues with a fantasy refit for speed, AA and maybe shell arcs you end up with something that isn't Blucher and doesn't make sense as WWI conclusively proved the obsolescence of armored cruisers. Investing in upgrading them would be a bad call in the interbellum.

I LOVE the SMS Bluecher!

She could well be a low tier battleship instead given she was basically a Battlecruiser with very small guns. Within the game mechanics that is not a problem though as you can HE enemy armour so there is no pressing need for big guns as there was in real life.

I'd put her as a premium T3 Battlecruiser/battleship :-)

You'd have an 8 gun broadside. Even BB dispersion wouldn't kill her. Think Nassau with smaller guns, less AP and less armour.

8 of Yorck's guns but with the AP arcs (i.e terrible) and without the alpha strike of a BB.

Make it a tier 2 Battleship -- like the Mikasa.

Have your wallets open...   lol

16 x 88mm AA guns

Actually 12 of them are in casemates. Only four are deck mounted in pivot mounts for AA defense. Now imagine Blucher in a tier 7 battle with Hiryus and Rangers. :hiding:

... with less range. At 10km (which is more a T3 Engagement range) Yorck's AP is devastating.

Combine that with less dispersion because cruiser guns and she would be more than capable at T3.

Good point on range, there's a reason I sold my Yorck but if everyone's flailing around at 10km it would look a lot better for sure.

Yea - I kept Yorck btw :-)

Unfortunately I doubt WG would give a T3 Bluecher the same accuracy as Yorck though. Could be used as balancing factor as she would be pretty strong regardless.

This, it would be a lot better for AC's to be in the BB tree as they are really a late 19th century battlecruiser although tier 2 is too low, tier 3 or 4 would be better.

Tier IV, I think. Uptiering to Tier VII with Hiryu/Rangers/Saipains/Kagas with just the four stock 88mm AA guns and a 25.4 knot speed is asking to be brutally murdered in the most graphic way possible.

At Tier IV, it would have an eight-gun broadside with four RPM and decent speed, good enough to lead a pack of cruisers or even duel with some BBs. She'd be the German version of the Nikolai.

You're probably right.

On paper, Blücher feels like an okay Tier 5, but with the current state of matchmaking she'd be really awful. Blücher as a Tier 4 - maybe with some stats "massaged" to help her fit in there - is probably a much better idea.

Either Tier IV or V would be fine. (I'd prefer tier IV). Hopefully Blucher will come as a premium soon. And an armored cruiser line. (That line should probably consist of WW1 battlecruisers - Panzerschiff)

Remember the 21cm SK L/45 didn't get any Post-WW1 modernized AP shells. But did get modernized HE shells. (HE L/4.3)
Had a rate of fire of 4 - 6 rounds per minute.
The (Yorck) 21cm AP shell already has an excellent Krupp value ingame.
In any case, I'd also prefer Blucher to have decent accuracy so that means Blucher definitely won't be at tier 3.
I'd rather have a good ship than a nerfed to junk one tier lower. If all this means Blucher must to go to tier 5, so be it.

As a tier 4 premium:
Four 8.8cm guns were mounted in pivots in rear superstructure. (Four of these guns were mounted in casemates near the bridge)
Only four 8.8cm guns as AA. Even with decent accuracy this ship should be at tier 4. Only 8 guns to fire on each broadside. And the turrets had a ~51 sec traverse. Blucher would be maneuverable and very tough but not OP.
4 RPM (15 sec) reload

Idea for tier 5 premium:
Four of those in casemates near bridge could be removed and mounted as AA pivots on forward superstructure as a (slightly)fictional hull.
So 8 total AA guns. Late in WW1, Germany was in fact mounting greater amounts of 8.8cm guns for AA.
Still poor AA, but it would help. (Blucher would still have four in casemates in the bow, another four in casemates at the stern)
Also as a tier 5, Blucher would benefit from better secondary range and access to more upgrades. Blucher would still take a beating from higher tiers though.
5 RPM (12 sec) reload

.

I would be a nice premium ship, depending of in game balance it could be either t3 or t4.

But Just a correction, some people here called Blucher a battlecruiser, but it really was a armored cruiser.
