Target Acquisition System Mod useless?

If I am not going to shoot beyond 20km, is target acquisition system useless?

 

Is it only useful during storm?

 

I put this on USS NC, but I have not seen any storm for a long long time in this ship.

The value of TASM1 is pretty small, IMO. 

 

It increases your proximity detection range, i.e. easier for you to detect someone that is ultra close despite the presence of smoke or even islands.

 

The other value is increases the detection range of torpedoes so you spot them earlier for better avoidance.

 

The catch however is giving up Steering Gears Mod 3, Concealment Systems Mod 1.  There are some Cruisers that really need SGM3, Moskva for instance.  There are numerous Cruisers and even Battleships that really need CSM1 for better stealth so they fade away easier and not as easy to pick on for focus fire at extended range.  These are some very serious pro's and con's and you'll find lots of people will give up TASM1 for something else.

I have it in my bismarck and amagi.     useful for dodging torps and   finding those hiding nearby in smoke.   conceal on BB is  ok, but I've been doing fine without it.    both of these ships have horrid conceal anyway.   NC is only one with  CM for me.

Once upon a time, when DDs could hunt other DDs in caps, I did fit it in my benson (before the german line came out, now with hydro it is not so good obviously). And DDs were just screaming that I was somehow cheating because I would detect them in smoke when they would not see me. It was murder.

 

I do not see much use for it these days though. Between planes, radars, hydro there are plenty detection abilities around. Also, it is a situational mod.
