Which Special Mods Worth Buying?

Here are my thoughts, but I'd sure appreciate other opinions.  Planning on using my Clash of the Elements credits on mods.

 

I already love Engine Boost Mod 1 which increases the duration of speed boost by 50%.  It's great for DDs - any DDs but especially speed-challenged ones like Akizuki.  Also great for Tier 6+ French cruisers.

 

Spotting Aircraft Mod 1 is hard to love.  You have to give up the Aiming Systems accuracy mod to be able to shoot at maximum range for a longer time... Or you give up AA Mod.  Yeah, I think I'll pass.  I actually sold that one.

 

Damage Control Mod 1 looks interesting.  As I understand it, the DC immunity period is extended by 40%.  IIRC American BBs have the longest immunity period so it would be best for those (assuming I understand the mod).

 

Radar Mod 1 increases radar duration by 40%.  Sounds great!  Except for the minor detail that you have to give up the Concealment Mod.  I've tried it on Moskva since that radar is so short and this increases duration from 25 seconds to 35.  That's nice.  However, Moskva can be seen from the Moon.  The Concealment Mod cuts it from 15.7 km to 13.8.  That's pretty significant.  Seems like this would be best for Missouri with it's already ridiculously long radar duration since it's a percentage boost.

 

Defensive Fire Mod 1:  this one could be useful if you have a cruiser with adequate AA range before the AA Upgrade.  +20% action time sounds good but the tradeoff is losing +20 AA range.  Taking Moskva as an example, the buffed AA range is 6.8.  That would go down to 5.7.  Which is better?  Bigger umbrella or 48s instead of 40s for Defensive AA?  Meh, I think range is better for the ships I own.  However, please shout out if you own a ship where this would be great.

 

Hydroacoustic Search Mod 1:  Ahhh, no IMHO.  It goes in that Accuracy/AA upgrade slot (#2) and I just can't see where that tradeoff would be worth it.  CORRECTION:  Minotaur hydro buffed from 100s to 120s sounds mighty fine!  And Fiji could sport one too.  Yes, I'd give up their AA range but longer hydro would be great.

 

Finally there's the Smoke Mod 1 which increases the "action time" by 30% but you lose 12% of duration.  The only ships this might make sense on to me are USN DDs.  You could lay one heck of a long smoke line for the big boys to move along while concealed.  Still, it takes the accuracy/AA upgrade slot.  Hmmm...

So you can't use this on French cruisers, as far as I know.


 

The radar one would work on the Des Moines.

Rest are pretty much a waste.


 

I'm getting another speed boost and putting it on my Blysk or Anshan.

I've been swapping the Engine Boost Mod around even though I have 2 already.  Khab/Leningrad/Udaloi/etc are hysterical with that mod :D

 

The Perth is supposed to go on sale tomorrow (?) but I already have 1 smoke mod.

 

P.S. checked Inventory and bought 1 more Engine Boost Mod 1.  "Good Choice" sez website...

Smoke, Engine boost, and Radar are the only 3 that are worth anything. Boost works just fine on French Cruisers. No idea where it says it doesn't, but in-game the description is correct in saying it can be applied to Tier VI to X Destroyers and Cruisers. Smoke on the Perth is kind of lol, as it adds 27 more seconds to the duration that the consumable keeps making smoke bringing it to 117s, and it only takes a second off the duration of the smoke puffs (from 10s to 9s). The Smoke upgrade is also fairly useful on the RN CLs, adding 2s to the amount of time it makes smoke, which can allow you to activate it a bit sooner without overshooting the smoke (duration the smoke remains up for loses around 10 seconds, which isn't too bad).

I have two engine boost mods, but I have enough atm to purchase another mod. DD main, but I play other ship types. 

 

Trying to make a decision to get a third, or something else. I don't see a real use for the others that much with what you have to give in return for them.

I had a hydro mod drop in a super container recently and stuck it on my Gaede. It's actually pretty good on her.

Damn, yeah I forgot about the hydro mod one. Gonna have to snag one for my german DDs, not to mention the Lo Yang as well!

Would you need to give up concealment on the Black to run the Radar mod as well? If not, then what?

 

EDIT: Assuming you can use it on a DD. No clue with all these dependencies with WG wording.

Speed Boost is useful on all DD's and hilarious on French CA's.

 

Hydro Acoustic is good on German DD's and CA's (I use it on the Eugen, as it replaces the accuracy mod).

 

Radar is... questionable... to say the least, as it replaces Concealment/Rudder, which are two of the most important modules for cruisers. I have one that I could put on my Baltimore or Des Moines, but it isn't worth it IMO.

Hydro Mod is godlike on high tier german DDs. I'm grinding the german DDs on NA now too and I've already bought one of these mods for my future Z-23 and hopefully I can earn enough coins in the last CoE week to get another hydro mod for my future Z46/Z-52 as well.

I purchased the radar mod by mistake (curse you, fiendish ok button!), and decided to put it on my Baltimore due to a need to have something to make me play that instead of my Des Moines, and the fact that the ship is still quite stealthy without the concealment module (not so the Des Moines).

 

I will note this module seems to be restricted to cruisers, as my Missouri did not have the option to mount this.

Hadn't thought about the hydro mod.

Been playing my Leander, Fiji, and Edinburgh a lot lately, and the hydro is a great offensive addition that can counter and sometimes help put dd's in their rightful place (under the water).  I'll have to try it I think.

boost and hydro   both have uses.   german DDs  love them. you give up nothing  you need  with 10km range and laser like shots  you dont need the accuracy.  boost replaces damage control also not needed on a DD
