1,762 Sir_Davos_Seaworth Members 4,272 posts 5,302 battles Report post #1 Posted April 21, 2017 Okay.....I've been waffling. I REALLY didn't need another Tier 6 BB. (yes I know she is a battle cruiser, work with me) But she is so dang pretty, and everybody who has one seems to like her...So I pulled the trigger tonight. First game, 3 point captain, Two Brothers. Gang, what you see, is what I did with the first 8 shells out of the guns. One salvo one kill. and my results: I should have had about 20 more shell hits, but these shells get there QUICK and I was shooting in front of stuff. Gud Boat! The only real issue I've had is the fires, which are noticeable. But if you stay with the team, share AA, and make sure you're not the only one charging, you can really wreak some havoc with the thing.

She got lots of meh reviews when she first came out, but she was worth it from the very start... And I don't think she's ever been buffed?

I've only had 17 battles with her and I'm still trying to figure out the best way to fight her. Her guns are excellent and maneuverability is damn good. However, Cruiser AP at close range tears her up big time. She certainly aint a brawler. Overall, I like her but I aint found the groove yet.

She is an odd bird. Treat her like a cruiser and avoid showing your broadside since you have all of you main guns firing forward and even when running it is pretty easy to swing the bow out and let loose. I wonder what would have happened if the French leaders in Paris hadn't lost heart and given up. The army was willing to continue fighting and had some brilliant commanders. deGaule and leclerc massed their armor against doctrine and drove the Germans nuts trying to defeat them. The best way to play the ship is to follow whichever blob or lemming train you deem the biggest, and then use a slow throttle setting while alternating stops and creeping forward as is prudent. You don't brawl, you don't lead, and you minimize your profile so as to remain an undesirable fruit - let other people carry that water for the team. Your objective should always be cruisers and DDs first (while this is true for all BBs, it's especially a rule for Dunks, whose fast, accurate guns can snipe destroyers at 10+ km and make a real difference for light forces). Your boat's contribution to the battle is surgical, and assures that your picket ships win early brawls. Then you can focus the heavies together.
17,545 [WOLF5] HazeGrayUnderway [WOLF5] Members 38,563 posts 31,207 battles Report post #16 Posted April 21, 2017 (edited) The ship's accuracy when her guns are shooting straight ahead is good because all her rifles are basically firing from essentially one point of the ship. This isn't like when the guns are pointing to the side or like other ships where the point of origin of the shells are scattered across the length of the ship. Dunkeke's shells straight on fire from ONE point. Here's a picture of her in port: That is A LOT of shells coming from essentially a single point of fire. Another thing is she isn't a "sniper" BB. She's kind of like high tier USN BBs that get comfortable at around 13km or so range with gun performance. In that range she is exquisitely dangerous to even DDs because her shells land in such a nice, small pattern. Provided you know how to aim, of course. With 8 shells it's not surprising to land 5 or so on some hapless DD that cannot take that punishment. A Cruiser is even worse off because they got citadels. BRING ME RICHELIEU! Charging her opponents at an angle, her armor can be really troll. Her only real weakness is her AA. CVs can hurt her pretty bad.

It's not like I need the spotter plane at 15 km, and every little bit helps.

The army was willing to continue fighting and had some brilliant commanders. deGaule and leclerc massed their armor against doctrine and drove the Germans nuts trying to defeat them. The French did not "lose heart", or "give up". Even though France was in serious political disarray and their military mired in old tech, they fought the most advance army in the world, both technically and professionally, in the air and on ground, for over a month before accepting the inevitable. Further fighting would have been a useless sacrifice, for the same conclusion. Note that the British and Belgian forces were also smashed and routed in this overall campaign. Contrast that to the US, who had time to prepare for the Germans, and knew exactly what they were facing, yet the first day they encountered the Germans at Kasserine they were trounced and routed. And this was the German Afrika Corps after it had been mauled by Monty.

I run a full AA equipped/specced Dunkerque, and it has decent long range AA firepower (71 dps at 7.5km) (68 dps at closer range). It only struggles against tier 8 CVs, which are rare. Even still, the ability to launch 2 catapult fighters really does give the chance that a dedicated CV will attack will lose most of it's planes and cause no damage (or minimal damage). Most CVs think the Dunkerque is an easy target and make a beeline for it, and lose most of it's planes before it realizes the mistake.
