My smoke

My smoke is my smoke. It is not your smoke. I will use my smoke to help my team when possible, and to help myself when necessary. It is a tool that I control at my discretion, not at your command.

Seriously, though. The recently departed season of ranked seemed to have given birth to the idea that the dd players owe it to their team to provide smoke, then burst forth into the world, naked and defenseless, to spot for those entitled to the smoke that the developer gods accidentally bestowed upon the bearer. Madness. Please stop it.

Well, sadly some people think like you

 

half the DDs are really support, and yes they should smoke the team and spot.... but with the new update, this is changing fast

If you play a support ship, the team will expect you to support.

If you want to play your own game, play a RU DD, or a BB.. seems like many BBs do that these days

I have no problem with others using my smoke, just plz dont block my shots. I seriously had a Monty pull in front of me in smoke while I was happily burning down a cruiser in my Gearing, and it caused me to do team damage. Pulled right along side and stopped, completely blocking me off from doing anything. Thankfully I saw him a split second before launching torps or I would have been pink and he would have been the worlds largest submarine. I think it was deliberate too. But yeah, more times than not I smoke for others as much as for me..................

Yeah. So, I smoke for others when I can, but it's the idea that I owe smoke to others that's gotta go. It's my tool. I will use it to help my team when I can, but don't whine when I don't cloak you. If I felt it was best, then you get cloaked...if I need my smoke to not get sunk, then too bad for you, cuz I got work to do. 

 

The point made is: stop expecting smoke from the dds to cover your a**. I will provide it when I can, but sometimes, you're on your own.

You're responsible to use your equipment to the best of your abilities in a way that you believe will win the match.

 

Sometimes smoking your allies is the best way to win the match... sometimes they're worthless and you should keep your smoke for yourself, simple as that.

Cruisers can fire an unlimited number of shells. I can pop smoke twice. So, there's that...

The point being made isn't about the use of smoke in given situations. INSTEAD, it about EXPECTATION. Lately it seems that dds are EXPECTED to provide it on command. My point is that is not realistic: I will decide when to pop smoke. It's mine. Feel free to ask, but don't whinge and whine when you don't get it.

In Randoms, you never know if the ship(S) you try to smoke will even use it effectively. Tonight I thoughtfully smoked a Dunkerque who was over-extended and being focus fired. Did he stay in the smoke?  No.  He sailed through it and got wrecked. 

 

Sometimes ships fail to use the smoke right even after demanding it. If there's a flanking DD or a plane, you have to be IN the smoke circle. Do you even have that turned on?

 

It also depends on the DD you're playing. USN DD smoke is a big, long lasting cloud that can hide multiple ships. German DD smoke doesn't last long enough to help anyone much. Russian smoke has fewer puffs and lasts just a bit longer than Germans. I try to use smoke for the team if I'm playing a low-detection DD and can spot too. However, Russian smoke is MY smoke. IJN is in between. 

 

And then theres the BB who rams my Fiji/Belfast/Neptune to get into my smoke. Never mind that it's not big enough to hide all of you ship or that you are pushing me out of my smoke to be torped and/or shot to death.

I will smoke a closely supporting ships at the beginning if I am in my DD.    I've done it when opportunity occurs, but  I tend to do it more at higher tier.     but I am playing less DDs.  getting tired of all the nerfs.

Yes that is one way to play destroyers. It is not mandatory or required of any DD player.

Kamikazi R - I often to use smoke to run away, or sometimes smoke and spot

USN DDs - I often smoke for the team and spot

No reason currently IMO to play any other DDs after last patch.  

 

I have no issues with sharing smoke.

If you request it, and I see the text, and I am able, I'm happy to smoke/cover/spot. Just blast those bastages trying to delete my DD, and maybe remember to give a Karma point. Anything to keep us alive a few minutes longer.

I never said it was mandatory or required of any DD player. Now, in a game where players are grouped in two teams, I believe having a bit of team play is not bad. It also seems to be the best way to get wins, Rank battles tend to show that.

 

Now, that type of play is unfortunately not rewarded in terms of XP or cash. So I wonder, why is a team game not inciting people to team play ?

As I DD main the OP's sentiments couldn't be more off base especially at the upper tiers. I'd say you are not using your captain skill points wisely if you have only the base 2 smokes.

 

Smoke is meant to help your team either strategically by laying it down to allow numerous ships to fire from it while the DD uses its concealment to spot for the team or defensively either to protect yourself or more importantly ships that are being focus fired by the enemy.

 

So use those limited smokes to the greatest benefit of the team. Your DDs concealment should not require you to smoke yourself too often however your average damage indicates you are probably putting yourself in bad positions where you are getting spotted way too frequently.

This has happened to me on more than one occasion. 

 

I had a match last week in my Neptune where I had a 'friendly' battleship (as in he was on the same team) demand that I smoke for him, even though I wasn't close to him at the time. I told him that RN smoke isn't designed for sharing. Cue torrent of verbal abuse.

 

Of course, I am more than happy to see a friendly DD lay a smoke screen for me and help me spot targets. You will always get a compliment from me (and a cookie if you're within throwing distance).

I do find it funny when a bb or CA follows a dd into cap and demands smoke, and berates the dd for not being able to give them it before they sink.

How about this:  Smoke to WIN!!!!

 

If smoking for self will help the win, then do it.  If smoking for others will help the win than do it.

 

I have had DDs smoke for me in my BB that literally won the game for the TEAM.
