What gives for the change of the command bridge between the A hull and B/C hulls on the USS Iowa?

Because when the Iowa's were built, the A hull is how the command bridge looked.

And then they got an upgrade before too long and bam, the B/C bridge was born.

Historically, the Iowa entered service in 1943 with an open bridge, as seen below.

During its overhaul, it received an angled closed bridge like the rest of its sisters.

Garzke and Dulin's book on US Navy battleships provides an explanation, quoted below.

Bridge configuration. One of the early features that distinguished the Iowa and New Jersey was their bridge configurations. Captain Carl Holden did not like the narrow walkway around the conning tower and open bridge, so he requested that the Philadelphia Navy Yard reconfigure the bridge. The result was a closed bridge with a curved front, a very distinctive feature of New Jersey from 1943-45. The Bureau of Ships revised the Iowa class's bridge arrangements to accommodate the electronic revolution. The Missouri and Wisconsin had enclosed bridges with straight sides.

The unique curved closed bridge on New Jersey is pictured below.

I was trying to post that same first image but must of been from another website that the forums don't like.

Great pictures and awesome post.  I've never read about the difference in bridge configurations.

I almost want to pull out my New Jersey model and have a look.  But it is stored away right now.  The effort to retrieve it and also the worry about damage I think wouldn't be worth it.

Well that answers my question entirely thank you. I didn't know about that curved bridge either, very interesting.
