The basic premise of the show is that Rick is a scientist who invents a porthole gun and becomes an inter-dimensional god because the multi-verse allows for an infinite number of Ricks. Somewhere along the line, he stopped caring and became a drunk who does what he wants when he wants without much care for consequences. His grandson Morty is not very bright but has the effect of shielding Rick from being tracked by his enemies. So Rick takes Morty on all kinds of twisted adventures that usually end up to some advantage for Rick after a large number of deaths, often including his family. Given the nature of inter-dimensional travel and the confusion it creates, Rick and Morty is somewhat hard to follow at first. But you'll get the hang of it. The only adult cartoon I've watched is Robot Chicken because it's actually had some really funny stuff. Rick would be horrified that you compare him to Peter Griffin, so much so, he would probably hunt you down and kill you(s) in whatever alternate dimension he happened to be in.
