Why would anyone play destroyers?

  • You need to play a total of 10 battles to post in this section.

The fact the OP is lamenting the lack of cvs in the game (and the associated perma spotting from fighters parked overhead), as a dd driver, instantly destroys his credibility to me.

It's clear that destroyers were meant to rely on their stealth, speed, and torpedoes, but recent patches have hit destroyers really hard. First the RN CLs with their crazy radar, then radio location finding, then the stealth firing nerf... destroyers are currently close to unplayable. With radar ranges longer than torp ranges, and the gun bloom as long as its gun range, it is just about impossible for DDs to survive into late game and still carry out normal destroyer duties such as capping and scouting. And of course, the CVs are few and far in between, which means that destroyers can't hunt carriers, because they aren't present most of the time.

I don't see why anyone would play destroyers when they can play cruisers and flush out destroyers hiding in smoke. Or eve better, play a battleship and spend half the game at max range sniping at other battleships. Some people will argue that skilled players can still used smoke and islands to their advantage, but that is beside the point. The best destroyers in the game right now, the Russians and the Germans, don't rely on stealth, they rely on speed and guns. So basically, after the recent 6.3 sledgehammer, destroyer are just smaller cruisers. They lack an unique identity, and they are extremely unforgiving to play.

DDs are more difficult to play at higher tiers with all that's stacked up against them but they are still very capable and fun.  To be honest I am not getting Krakens/Confederates as much as I used to, but its not unbearable.

Here are some RADAR tips to help you out:

1) Before you load, observe and note which opposing ships have radar and which ships on your team have radar.

2) Observe on the map where their radar is going and be mindful of its range.

3) Escort your own radar if possible

4) Make as much use as possible of Islands, although radar sees through it, at least you can't be shot.

5) Try to stay on the edge of their radar zone, when it pops just move out of it a little and wait it out... then push back in when its done.

6) If you see 2 radar ships closing in on your smoke, don't wait to get lit up, dump torps and take off.

7) Know the timers, range and cooldowns of all radar ships: http://wiki.wargaming.net/en/Ship:Consumables (I keep an index card handy with such info)

Yes RADAR is a pain in the [edited]for DDs, but it can be mitigated if you apply appropriate tactics in high tier games.

Carriers are an air class.

.....except they float like other ships which means they are a 'water class' too. The 'air class' are the planes you Sea Sponge.

.... because DDs are still challenging to play?

.....because DDs are still 'fun' to play?

.....because DDs stare death in the face whenever they engage.

After the patch I found that I have to be very passive initial 5-10 minutes. Especially soviets with their poor concealment I pretty much stick with the fleet. I found for the most part other classes are not harassing me so yey :):):)

In general don't use guns at the start. Torps only and don't go too far from fleet.

It is very sad as the start of a battle is super boring. I usually load some YT vids to watch while my fleet is slowly getting into range. I find there is very little for DDs to do now in the initial 5-10 mins.

Later on yes you can play as before once ships start shooting at each other and you are not getting focused by everyone.

Wow...

This is so incredibly wrong on so many levels. I haven't looked, But I would imaging you have a very difficult time controlling your win rate in DD's?

The early game is in fact, probably the most important time for you as a DD. Especially in a game with no CV. It is absolutely critical to know where the enemy fleet is deploying BEFORE you engage, and you are the only ship with enough stealth to provide that information without being focused to death. You even need to try and spot out the red DD's as best you can, their location is even more critical than that of the rest of the enemy fleet.

With the actions that you perform in the first 5 minutes, you are not only not helping your team, you are being an active detriment to them.

Contrary to popular opinion, you can provide most of the same intelligence with Soviet DD's too, through speed tanking. If you can spot them outright... do so. If they have better stealth than you, use your speed to bait them into shooting at you, and missing, spotting themselves for the rest of the team.

I think the argument here is that dds are NO LONGER 'the only ship with enough stealth' to provide location information without being focused to death.  If dds on both teams play as you suggest, as soon as we are spotted by the other dd we are pretty much focused to death.  Early knife fights are impossible.  I have to agree with the OP.  Let  BBs spot for the team.  They can take the hits.

I  think good DD play can still be fun. I just had 120k match with udaloi where I pretty much wreck gearing  and  shima  (as well as kill fletcher that came looking for me)  we were down and I capped all 3  plus help kill the final BB  (we were down by 400point when I killed the shima and they had  2 caps)  it is match like this that makes it fun.

I don't do early cap with it though.  pretty much a support unit until things are thinned down a bit.     good match where I felt like I carried.  :D  (you know when your hand is starting to shake a bit)

6.3 changed exactly nothing with this.

If you get locked into a knife fight with another DD, getting focused to death while you do. The outcome would have been exactly the same prior.

Placebo effect.

DDs are the least boring class to play, their YOLOs are often epic and they they still have a greater impact than any other class. And yes carriers can be influential if their captains are competent, but that is actually rare.

You got that right. Started the game in 2015 playing the USN Cruiser line to the Pepsicola. I thought the game was a little dull. Almost moved on to some other game.

Switched to Playing the IJN DD line and have never looked back. Love playing the Kamikaze and the Shimakaze alternately. Although, it's getting hard to tell the difference in skill level between the two.

they are NOT little, soulless cruisers. they are slower (if you count WASD effects, which you can't live without), with little tiny guns, zero armor, no citadel, unless you count the whole boat as one, pretty good stealth, crappy torpedoes compared to the CAs, and by far and away the most fun to play in this game. with the singular exception of submarines.

Managed 20 torpedo hits in my Gearing the other day.  Nope...still viable and still effective.

I do love the Destroyer problem is a lot of the really good destroyer drivers arnt playing them as much or stopped playing  and we have a lot of people that don't know how to drive destroyers playing stupidly

I see a lot of these threads, yet I'm seeing more games where the DDs on each side are 4+.  Thought no one was playing DDs anymore?

I've been in matches with 2- DD each side a lot.

See. I can have my confirmation bias too. :)

I pretty much only play DD's and mostly Yugumo, most of my games are 2 DD's a side with the occasional 1 or 3 and very rarely 4 or more. You will never see me stop playing DD's they are just too much fun.

True I'm a Destroyer Main and lately I've seen a lot of games with four five Destroyers and then a lot of fun games but there's times it's just one vs two destroyers I definitely have to say it's not as many as it used to be

The majority of the games I'm in it's 1 or maybe 2 DD per side. Been in a few that are 1 DD games which i found weird to play in.Actually had a laugh when I was the only DD in a 4 CV game later than evening.

People can say it's business as usual for Destroyers but things have certainly changed. I know I'm playing a lot more conservatively with guns, been playing KM, never liked torp/stealth play, not playing anything high tiers USN now (What's the point in Gearing basically) and I'm playing a bit of Tashkent 2.0 to get my double in towards Khab. A lot of my DD play is slightly half hearted now, caring a lot less about my results/team/performance, which is kinda a drag.

A teammate was asking for smoke in his BB and I said "sorry, gotta save it for myself, loving that new meta!"

Destroyers have gotten tougher (again) but with no increase in rewards. Leave the play hard but cough up the goods for good DD play. Reward all the "intangibles" and maybe we will see more people playing the class.

only DD that I play regularly is udaloi and sims  (sims mostly for captain XP)       I really don't enjoy DDs much anymore with lack or support and just stupidity.

I'm playing Clemson because it hasn't changed (yet) with the multitude of nerfs that have seemed to have targeted other DD more specifically and at higher tiers for the most part. As well as a few premiums I have fun in like Gremy just to have killer games then say " Invisifire OP, oh wait they removed it..." but as a whole my time in WOWS is mostly a game here a game there now, my focus just isn't with the (aimless) direction the title seems to be going.

If in the end it's decided DD needs a "rework" or wholesale changes you need look no further than CV to see how well WG handles floundering classes and their changes. It'll be awhile, if ever.

Stay away from Shiratsuyu, torp'd a Farragut today and 17k max damage torpedos only did 5k per hit. Me and the Farragut were both in shock and how he can survive 2 hits and still have decent amount of HP left.

My Kagero has 20k torps and even against BBs who have torpedo damage reduction it's 10 to 12k per torpedo hit, but against a Farragut my 17k Shiratsuyu torpedo becomes 5k.
