I hope they don't add destroyer escort.

If they do this is my reaction.

Too late, T-22 (the tier 5 German destroyer) is a "Fleet Torpedo Boat" which is basically the German designation for a Destroyer Escort.

I think you missed what I was getting at.

The T1 ships are more modern than the T2s. On top of that they're smaller, and much closer to a true gunboat than they are a cruiser. So essentially, they're like the destroyer escorts(though probably bigger than them). In essence, DEs would never be in this game, one reason being they wouldn't have the tonnage to compete outside of T1 and maybe T2. It's a lot like how another type of ship that shall not be named, which gets brought up all too often around here, wouldn't be competitive outside of T1 and T2 with one reason being they don't have the tonnage to do so.

American DEs could make it up to about tier 5 (based purely on tonnage and not combat competitiveness) assuming their hitpoints are calculated the same way destroyer's are. Otherwise, WG could give DEs a unique hitpoint formula that would benefit them.

And that's the catch. We're talking about ships that have half the armament of a T1 ship, not counting torpedoes, of which I believe they'd only have two or three tubes anyway.

Yeah, but you're point was that DEs wouldn't have the tonnage to be anything better than tier 1 or 2, which is wrong, you said nothing about their armament. I wasn't arguing a case for DEs to be in game up to tier 5, or thereabouts, because they'd be balanced, rather, I was refuting your claim that they do not have the tonnage to be anything above tier 2. They have the tonnage, they do not have the armament or speed. Again, talking specifically about the American DEs here. Edited by dseehafer

About the only way that DE's would work in the game would be as low tier premium DD's. The Samuel B Roberts a John C. Butler class DE would be a good choice and would sell like the proverbial hot cakes among history buffs. Give it the 28 knots it managed during the Action off Samar and fast firing guns to go with her triple torpedo mount and a relatively low detection range for a very small window to fire torpedoes undetected before concealment expert.

I think what the creator of this thread is worried about is if they add Destroyer escorts Submarines he's are likely to soon follow because Destroyer escorts were used mainly for sub hunting and had the agility and speed to intercept subs and Depth charge them to death before the subs got close to critical elements of the battle fleets.

hate to break it to you but.... WG WILL be adding DEs to the game! but not for a long while. They want to get France and Italy into the game first before they add more alternate lines!:read_fish:

WG say they'll be maybe adding Subs as AI opponents for possible escort missions in the future. but again, this type of game feature is going to be 1-2 years away before they implement it,:read_fish: we could even maybe have island invasion missions and have AI Medium bombers attack our ships if WG wanted to get creative! Unlike WOT's devs, the WOWS crew is way more open to suggestions and actually listen to feedback form STs/Alphas and Betas!:great:

Lol if they wanted land inavasion support mission just link the game up to World of Tanks and let the tanks attempt to shell the offshore ships lol that would get interesting...

After all many WOT maps do have shore lines with ocean.

USN DEs during WWII had two principal duties: radar pickets and escorting convoys for submarine protection.  Neither of these is very prominent (as yet) in WoWS.  I doubt they would be introduced soon, if at all.

....except for the fact that a DD escort is literally any DD that happens to currently be escorting another ship. It's not like they have a class all to themselves.

As originally designed the DE's were really just small  slower DD's but as the war went on it was realized that the DE's would be more useful with more AA than with torpedoes. The Samuel B Roberts was one of the few that kept the torpedoes.
