Help me with German cruiser ammo selection

I've been having so much fun with the Graf Spee, I decided to give the German cruiser line a try.  Free XP'ed to Tier 5 because I'm not much of a "clubber."

Played one game.  Did 40k damage.  Love it so far.

Big question on my mind is when is it best to use AP vs. HE.  The AP looks good enough that this line isn't straight up HE spammers.  What say ye?

Generally, I spam AP.  Even when angled, the damage is comparable to the poor HE, especially with DE nerfed.

AP is very good with them but it doesnt have high krupp value so angled ships shrug it off well. The HE with DE skill is very good at starting fires but has low alpha damage.

German ships are a little different from the other by the fact that broad AP shots are well worth it but the HE is more about the fires that outright damage. They have good range compared to others and that is a big asset to maximize.

Basic rules apply. If the target is angled enough that AP bounces, use HE.

I've found, barring 1v1, you don't switch ammo type, you switch targets. The HE is just so laughably bad that it is a total last resort for me.

Personally, I've had quite a bit of luck with HE on the DDs, at least with the 150mm guns, because of their incredible velocity (960m/s!). However, against most targets, I use AP (even BBs), if they angle, got for the superstructure. The low krupp will hurt your AP when anything is angled, so be aware, even on the later CA's, whose pen is otherwise very good.

The tier VII, Yorck, is the only one where your AP is poor (shell is light as hell, despite being 210mm, so the pen is crap), so spamming HE is advisable. As for the tier VIII and up... I haven't used the gun, but it's the same gun being used till tier X.

If anything is broadside except for a DD, give em the business with AP. German 203 AP shells can penetrate a BB's citadel at close range. For anything else, you load HE and put the ROF to work.

Except for Yorck, cause the Yorck is just a wierd ship all around.

Broadside or near broadside: AP
Not broadside: HE

Superstructure: AP

Here is my routine: pump HEs until you get a fire, then switch to AP and pound the super structure

how hard could it be?

How would you fire at ships at 12 km or more away?  Is it still worth using AP?  I am currently on the Yorck and I have Konigsberg as well.

Yorck is an oddball. Generally, Yorck does better when you keep your distance and just rain HE on the enemy, but the AP is useful against broadside targets within about 10km. Yorck is one of the ships on which I really valued the Expert Loader commander skill, to make ammo swaps faster - but that's probably not the ideal way to do it.

German Cruiser AP is lackluster as all hell.  It has higher damage value but it shatters, non-pens, bounces just like anything else, and the Germans get "compensated" with horrible HE+Fire Chance.

I tried doing all AP in Yorck and managed to do okay damage.  It wasn't so bad considering that there was an Atlanta three ship division getting mondo fire damage.  I may just keep this up because it actually did more harm to BBs at long range than I expected, and when they stopped angling I was already set to start getting in the good hits.

Yorck is the only German Cruiser that is unique in how her shells behave.

Her AP shell flight characteristics are abysmal past 11km.  They hit pretty hard when they do hit, though.  Her HE flies very well and unlike other German Cruisers, the values are very nice, solid.

Try HE at most ranges and switch it up to AP for the right targets at 11km or less.

People really under value HE in German cruisers. Königsberg is my most played ship and I never bother to use AP unless it's a broadside target. I had a match with her where I set 21 fires.  The HE fire chance may not be very high, but the ship has a very good rate of fire that makes up for it.

I should mention I also have a Graf Spee.  The long reload doesn't bother me as I play an E 100 in WoT.  What are recommendations for that?  If I know I'm going to get a shot on a Destroyer, I use the HE and effects seem good.  Other than that I use HE for British cruisers, AP for all other Cruisers, and otherwise just go for the basic HE at extreme range/angled BBs and AP otherwise.

Graf Spee guns are more like BB guns, stick to AP for most instances unless against well angled BB. Against broadside BB, Graf Spee AP still does good damage against superstructure/upper hull (above belt armor), forecastle and stern areas of the ship.  If you worry about overpenning British cruisers, then aim below the waterline instead of switching to HE.

Starting with the Konigsberg, shoot AP unless it is bouncing a lot on angled targets, then shoot HE.  The exception is the Yorck, where you should spam HE because its AP is pretty poor.

I shoot the superstructure when I have no other choice (it's bow on to me and AP is what's loaded) but that's just because it is intuitive.  What are you hoping for with these kinds of shots?

I unlocked Hipper yesterday and I am so glad to be finished with Yorck.  Now I can actually play these as something besides discount ships again.

I'm a big fan of setting fires...so I mostly stick to HE unless they're pretty flat to me. Demo Expert helps.
