Apart from a raft of rewards forthcoming--most minor but well-received, and some quite major--there is now a strategic level in the way you approach battles, from choosing and setting up ships for specific tasks, to the way you play a ship in battle. But to return to my initial point, this dynamic goes a long way towards reducing the morale hits most experience with battle losses--whether you played well or poorly, you can still advance the overall Mission.
