Dear Frustrated Ranked Player,

Reaching Rank 1 is one of your objectives in World of Warships. When you play stellar but your teammates do not, you do not lose a star. Without giving hope you press "Battle On." This time you lose a star to that dredded YOLOing Sims player that goes to farm as much XP before even smoking your teammates on. But still you do not falter. You gain a star, lose a star, keep your status, repeat. It's a grinder and tugging at your mind that you could've done better that last game. If you had done a little bit more.

You are now in the Rank 5-1 bracket and you rejoice that you are finally out of the chaotic 15-6 bracket. However, to your dismay the battles are even more chaotic, more fierce, more static/campy, etc. It's almost like cancer. You keep falling down and getting back into the 5-1 bracket. Then you are 1 star away from rank 4. Which is when I had you as a teammate. I was 1 star away from ranking out. I'm anxious, sweating heavy, breathing heavy, Mom's spaghetti. The map is south spawn in North. We go A, the enemy goes B. I'm in my Atlanta and I somehow cap A. I see that the Gneisenau is starting to swing around the corner of B so I go there to prevent that. To your dismay, both Atlantas in my team are against the Gneisenau because the Nagato you were heading in a Northernly direction already past A. My tactics failed and both of your allied Atlantas died to the Gneisenau's superior firepower. In your anger you type in chat that if you have to play with players like me on your team, you would rather TK the incompetence away. Of course I don't report you because understand your frustrations. You didn't lose a star because of your High Caliber chasing DDs all game long.

This infuriates you to no end. You start ranting how it's ENTIRELY my fault that the game was lost. threw away what should've been a close victory. I was the noob. I did not do my part to win the match. You called my blithering idiot that cannot see what I did wrong. I try to explain to him that I was anxious and I lost my cool, but that was not acceptable. Apparently I am not another player like you; flesh and bone, thinking, feeling, behind a keyboard and computer. I make mistakes. The next game you are on my team again, both of us toxic as ever. I am frustrated now that I am 2 stars away from ranking out.

The map is New Dawn north spawn. We head to A cap, a Sims smokes between the two islands and you think it was a brilliant idea to station your Nagato in that smoke only to realize a triple salvo of Shiratsuyu's tor-poi-does were aimed at the smoke. I try my best to win the game. I really did. I used my radars, my hydros, my tactical wit, but in the end it was not enough. An almost dead Atlanta is no match against a full health Atlanta at 8km. You then are frustrated that you are going to lose another star. You blame me again. I can't help but wonder if I could've done better or not. It doesn't matter though because this time I didn't lose a star.

That was the last time I saw you. On Friday, I attained my first Jolly Roger with a 51% WR (my career average is 53%) with 290 battles played in the Atlanta and a total of 297 games played. Curiously I wanted to know how far you have progressed. So I looked at your stats.

Hidden. That's a shame. I guess I should respect your privacy .

I go onto shipcomrade's ranked leaderboards. I search and I search and I find you....with over 500 battles played already...and a WR less than 50%. Your persistence is admirable, your frustrations are mutual. However, your abusive nature in chat has lost my respect. I am an average player. Playing games is not my job, it's a game I play during my free time. Hopefully you understand that all the other players you face and play with are people just like you except we come from all walks of life and cultures. In the end it's just a game where your hand eye coordination is rewarding you with digital boats and pirate flags.

I know as a fact that you do not frequent the forums, but if you do, and actually do read this, maybe it's not your teammates...It's you. I'm sorry I threw away that game, but my Jolly Roger flying from my Atlanta is not.

Keep a positive attitude in ranking out fellow captains.

I've been flipping back and forth rank 4-3 and 5-4. For all the wins I get, I could've gotten rank 1 but alas, too many defeats in the interval and some of them were nearly won. I understand premium ship captains don't care about wins and loses because the prem bonus on exp will ensure they retain their stars 90% of the times. Me, on the other hand, struggled in the game with my regular Nagato. It really breaks us paupers' heart when we strained our brain to perform stellar only to get a defeat. Sometimes selfish damage farming makes people lose composure.

Just my side of opinion of a non-premium player. I can totally sympathize why people become toxic in ranked. However, I'd just sigh and kept pressing the battle button, hoping to have better teammates.

Premium ships don't get any premium bonus to base xp (which is what the scoreboards are based on). Well, besides the Sims which has an invisible modifier to base xp from what I've heard.

Premium ships only get xp modifications after the base xp. Playing ranked in the Atlanta I can assure you I had to fight tooth and nail to not lose a star in  many battles. Only the Sims gets an invisible buff to its base XP (dunno how much though).

Uh, not sure about the 'playing stellar' and not losing a star. Because it's tier 7, sims with the base xp bonus is pretty hard to out play even if the sims is average.

Any bit helps for a player that is slighter better than the other teammates.

Nice article. I totally lost my cool yesterday when I was just ONE bloody star to ranking out and MM decided that the time isn't right for me. BAM. I lost 8 matches in a row with a few wins after that and lost again. Now I am ranked 3 with 2 stars. Rank battles definitely pays off to those who are not only skillful, but also lucky enough to be in a coordinated team.

OP, I liked your love letter to your comrade.

But this section really resonated with me - I think I engender these kinds of hate emotion into my colleagues.  They dont see that the last battle I got high calibre, 4 kills and two caps yet still lost the match.  This battle, I potatoed because that is who I am.  It is who I will always be.  I shall be Rank 5 forever.

And I am sorry that I cause so much frustration in my teammates.

I do feel that way sometimes. I'm at Rank 11 right now (Was at rank 10), but sometimes it's just not my day. I had almost a 60% WR until Rank 10. Then I had one day of, no joke, 33% WR. Now it's back to 50% and I'm starting to slowly make the way back to rank 10. However, it is very frustrating, and I can see why people blame it on the team. In some cases (One of my matches had a teamkiller who literally killed two of our ships) it's justifiable. But in most cases, some people just have a bad game. Can't really blame them for it.

Good luck to all of you ranked battle players!  I hope you are not cursed for your play.  I decided not to play this season because I knew at Tier 7 I'm just not good enough and I would hold my team back and be the subject of the type of vitriol the OP speaks of.

I've been you, and I've been that guy. Stuck between 5-6 for a week now, literally every time I get up to 5 I get a super-potato team (9 times, 5 of which I didn't lose a star, but in fairness,I did potato twice.) Try to stay as reasonable as you, but it's hard when three times in a row team is on fault line and 3-4 ships literally hide behind the island south of A all game. I generally don't get toxic about people that at least try, no matter how bad they screw up, but I get really toxic about people that hide all game or cruise the map edges hoping the other 6 will carry them, especially when 3 or 4 people on my team are obviously hoping for a carry and not doing crap(3 can't carry 4, unless other team is even worse)

Pondering giving up on this season; it's just not fun when so many people are loading in trying to be carried not even attempting to win. 90% of battles for me are steamrolls one way or the other. It's worse than randoms, because 1-2 passive potatoes make a bigger difference in 7v7. Win or lose, it's a steamroll.

Kudos for trying to maintain positivity and congrats on ranking out!

Tis my first attempt at Ranked.  I find it much better than random, more team coordination.  That being said however....I would like to get the Rank 1 but don't feel it is ever going to happen.  I am only but an average player still learning more each time.  It kills me when I try try, try but go 4 for 14 on a weekend.  Totally destroying my WR and can never get more than a couple wins in a row...never leaving Rank 15.   I find the teams much better during the weekdays, but do not have the time to grind away during the week.  Although I am not as good as the OP or most of ya...do dream of a Jolly Roger flying proudly on my ships...maybe next time it will happen for me.  Ill keep at it getting better ...(Hopefully) but do not know how to get around the weekend poop without magically becoming a unicum, and that's not going to happen.  Anyway do understand the plight and hope to be there someday....

Gratz on making it SRM! I can't even express the relief I felt when the Rank 1 popped up on my screen Saturday morning.

My advice to the salty captains? Do your best, then take a break and come back later. Set attainable and realistic goals for daily progress.

Just strive to do better every ranked season. I have improved each of the four ranked seasons I've played. I would have probably ranked out last season had I not had to move in the middle of it and finished at rank 5; I probably could this season but the meta and the potato factor are killing me. I made it to 5 so matched my best season and am pondering whether to call it quits. But my goal for next season will be simply to do better than 5.

The fact that you don't overestimate your own ability makes you better than a lot of players in ranked, because at least then you'll be striving to improve. :D

More of a rant

I mean he did end up stalking the hell out of that guy. There have to be feelings involved.

People ranking out with less than 50% wr and I can't rank out with 59% win rating this season so far. Guess I don't have enough time to play enough games...#feelsbadman...
