Yamato Not Too Fun - Suggestions?

I finally completed the grind up to the Yamato and thought I would love it. Instead, I feel like I'm driving a bus with huge citadels and terrible AA. I've only played it a few times in co-op, trying to learn the ship, but I'm having difficulty finding the motivation to keep playing. My favorite ship is the Warspite, primarily because the big guns cause considerable damage no matter where the shells hit. I thought I would find similar play in the Yamato, but so far not so much.

I either have great games or I die quite quickly in my Tier 9 Iowa, though I love the AA coverage and have it set up for that and concealment.

The tier 8 Bismark was quite fun, and I've started to find similar affection for the Tier 9 Fredrich Der GroBe. This ship is set up for secondaries, which are quite fun.

My Yamato is also a secondary build, which I find melts cruisers and DD's, though not as many fires as the German secondaries produce. Secondaries also require you to show more side than the German line.

My current build: Aux Armaments Mod 1, Secondary Battery Mod 2, AA guns Mod 3, DCS Mod 1, Steering Gears Mod 2, Concealment 1

I have a 16 point captain with a manual secondaries build.

I seem to enjoy brawling and closer combat, so I've tried that with this build, driving in close, then turning away. I've had several 160k damage co-op games and come out on top, but they're just not that fun. One wrong move on my end, and it's citadel city for me. Darn. The AA just sucks, with most of the damage at 3.5 km and hardly anything at 6 km.

Where do you have your most success with Yamato? Manual secondaries build, or tanky build with 30 second fires?

How do you drive the ship? Do you snipe at a distance or brawl with her?

Do you spend much time bow in, reversing, or do you find yourself motoring about?

I'd love any thoughts you have or build recommendations. Thanks!

I have not gotten to Yamato yet, but it looks like it is loaded with AA guns!? Maybe if you are still having trouble see if a friend can shadow you with a good AA ship and in return you size and armor help shield him from shell fire? Have had AA ships shadow me in some ships and worked out well since some ships are aircraft magnets so they zero in on you only to get shot down thanks to AA fire from you and your friend with you.

I think your biggest issue is you are playing Coop battles. While I find the AI is overall quite intelligent the DD will not  hesitate to run down a battleship to get torps off and kill you. The AI has no sense of self preservation.

In my opinion, the best way to play a BB like Yamato is to keep her angled at mid range while staying rather close to other ships for the AA.

(Alt+0223 makes the proper ß)

Thanks for the tip, Admiral. I'm quite a casual player with maybe a few hours over two weeks to play. I do completely agree with you about how Yamato looks, but the best AA ships are the ones who have more damage at 6 km than at 3 km. You take out more planes before they strike, and they're in the damage envelope longer. My Yamato with the buffed AA module, and both basic and advanced fire control does 182 dps at 6km, and 421 dps at 3.7. That's as highly buffed as I can make it, while keeping the manual secondary build.

By comparison, my Tier 9 Iowa has 227 dps at 7.2, 453 dps at 5.1, and 293 dps at 2.9km.

Tier 9 Fredrich Der GroBe

Know the difference between 'Friedrich der Große' and 'Friedrich der Grobe'? One means 'Friedrich the Great' and the other one means 'Friedrich the rough'.

Haha. I love the comment about the B. I pressed alt+0223 and had no luck. Is it my US keyboard, Win 7?

You may be exactly right about co-op being the problem. The AI just runs straight at enemies and they group up considerably. :)

Haha. I'm playing on my wife's business laptop on hotel wi-fi, so playing the ship is definitely "B" = rough. ;) When I get home to my nice Internet and setup, perhaps the games will be "ß" = great. Have a good weekend.

Old German grammar rules allow it to replace an 'ß' with an 'ss'. Same goes for 'ä' (ae), 'ö' (oe) and 'ü' (ue).

Enjoy your weekend :)

You will just have to make sure you keep your wingman safe since if he has awesome AA he most likely will need your guns to to take care of most surface threats that approach.

Just because you don't doesn't mean that noone does. I see at least one person here who did. So take your negative attitude and annoy someone else.

May have to resort to "ss" this is what happens when I press and hold ALT while entering 0223 =

Has to be my US keyboard, old laptop or Win 7. Who knows. Thanks for the tip, though. I'll try it when I get home and have my Win 10 setup. ;)

I keep trying to make friends with the co-op bots, but they're a bit...anti-social. ;) I do see some real folks in there, so I'll see if I can hang close to a nice US cruiser. Thanks for the tip.

I struggled with Yamato for the first 10ish games before things started to "click." The ship heavily punishes poor positioning because you don't have the turning circle, rudder shift or speed to get yourself out of a bad situation. It is a powerful ship, but it isn't a solo warrior: make sure you have a clear plan with your team so that you know where to start rolling to. Of course sometimes even a basic degree of teamwork, "go AB," isn't going to happen. In that case really look at the minimap to see what the disposition of your team is, and position yourself accordingly. You don't want to be "sniping," over 15-16 km range, but you also have to be careful not to overextend and get focused down. The latter was my main failure early on, where I would overextend and get shredded in seconds by focus fire from the enemy team. As a result my first few games had horrible damage numbers, in the 30k range, because I wasn't living long enough to really make an impact. The general reaction to that is to play overly passive and end up doing nothing because you aren't tanking for your team and you are too far away to really put your guns to good use. It is a very delicate balance that depends on the situation, and it is something you only gain from experience. I find the magical range for Yamato (under ideal conditions) is 10-15 km. Over that and you aren't going to be doing much tanking or damage, below that and you are asking to get torpedoed and/or forced to brawl in a ship that is very poorly suited to brawling.

To avoid all this that's why many will nickname the ship...or as in my lazy case, FDG, GK. :-)

Yamatos... generally I see them played towards the rear, moving slowly, bow on with the slightest angle from the main battles. Many of them seem to have the propulsion module because for a big whopper of a ship, it goes from nothing to hauling very quickly. Those same folks kinda hang around like that till mid-battle then they start to push a tad... it's rare not to see a Yamato in end-game.

Very helpful! I tried just that and actually had a game I enjoyed. I really do agree with you about brawling. Positioning is everything. Thanks!

Thanks. I'm figuring out the Yamato, and now like it more than my US BB line.

I've secondary specced mine, with secondary reload instead of AA. I think as long as you're not sniping all day you can easily contribute to every game.

Look at her armor models in port. The octagonal citadel is your biggest enemy and greatest asset. Many tier 10 BB drivers know it, and will attempt to aim for it. Luckily if you're wiggling there a good chance they'll bounce all day on your belt or overpen your bow. Yamato may not be a brawler but she has the raw HP, secondaries, and armor to give great midrange smackdowns.

As far as positioning goes, I like to cut across the map at game start and join the team at the furthest cap we're pushing. This allows you to participate in those opening trades as a support, slowing to to support areas as needed. Once you've reached your target cap, the DD battles should have been settled and you'll know if it's safe to move in or not. Also by picking a far cap you should be able to keep your guns in one direction for most of the game. A full rotation can take upwards of a minute, and your aft turret will take closer to two!
