How to Kiev?

Thus far I've been playing all VMF DD mostly in a counter DD role, that is, using their superior speed and firepower to chase down and kill any and all opposing DD. However, find with that Kiev, this isn't a good play style, the ship doesn't have the HP to survive close in slug fests with other gunboat DD, or the  handling (it's much longer thus far larger turn radii and makes WASD less effective) to actually avoid focus fire even if it can go to an upwards of 45 knots. This is made all the more worse given the proliferation of RN CA with their rather high velocity fast firing guns, so once you're lit (and you will be lit) having 3-4 CA shooting at you isn't too pleasant.

Less aggressive? Hang back more? Engage further back?

My stats with Kiev thus far have been utterly horrible, it reflects that I'm doing some drastically wrong since my other tier 7 DD, Mahan, is arguably easy mode.

Thanks

From what I have figured out so far, is you really need a 13 point captain to make it shine the most. It is going to a huge amount of it's damage from fire.

BFT, AFT and DE are almost a must have combo. Once you have those, stay at that 10-14km range an pewpewpewpewpewpew.... If your guns are quiet, you are doing it wrong.

Killing other DD's is a big thing that they are good at, but only at range. If you get in close with USN DD you are going to lose. But do not focus on only DD's.

On of your biggest jobs as a Soviet DD is to keep people back. Make yourself visible and shoot at everything.Light lots of fires to keep DCP's on cooldown. People are hardly willing to push against a Soviet DD. You can stall a front of 5 or 6 ships alone when played well. So your job is not pushing, but area control. Just by your mere presence alone.

In a kiev you stay at range while burning ships. Don't rush USN DDs, your advantage is excellent gun arcs and your high speed, let them chase you.

Kiev is an awesome ship. Stay in the open water. Use your speed and wiggle to throw off shells.

You need DE and AFT to really shine. Stay between 11-14km and shoot at cruisers and battleships (mostly battleships). You're a harrasser so if you can get into the back of the map, do it.

I had a match the other day where nobody came to my side. So I got behind them and rushed their CVs. Panic ensued. We easily won the game.

Basically open water, running like a bat outta hell, firing HE at slow moving targets. If a cruiser or BB shows you broadside, switch to AP, I don't care the range.

Thats utterly pathetic advice for a dd.

Ive been making short work of Kievs trying to play King of the World in ranked with the Sims, while in random battles i was getting the better of it vs the Kiev while driving a Maass. Not sure how things will be after the update to the RUS tree, but probably more of the same

Kiev is a joke ship a very bad joke keep until split and sell it for the leninggrad.

unless of course you know how to Kiev, run around at range, burn ships....

WHy do people insist that a DD should be ONLY about torpedoes.???

Kiev is better at doing what it is supposed to do than a Tashkent, just sayin....

eAnd IIRC the Leningrad is a PREMIUM SHIP.....JUST SAYIN

You sir have no idea how to Kiev...

Kiev is great at harassing and area control. Like I said, most players ARE NOT willing to push against a ship like Kiev, Udaloi or Khab.

Use your speed and range to keep them out of the area you have chosen to control.

that guy.... he has no Idea about the Kiev... he complained about the 4KM torps,,, and that seemed to be his main thing..... LOVES the TRASHCAN because the torps....IMO the KIEV is better at doing what RU DDs do until the Udaloi and Kharb... it is faster, more Maneuverable than the Tash........ Tash has sluggish turns, and iffy speed and the guns are not an improvement at all really....

It is funny to see Noobs trash the Kiev cause the torps....and FWIW I ahve sunk MANY a BB with those 4KM lightspeed torps.....

such cluelessness here..... so sad

This is what my life in RU DD's looks like so far.

rtWsGKc.jpg

I was making so much XP in Kiev that I was able to get past it in 15 battles with no free XP. I did free XP past Tashkent, and absolutely loved Udaloi.

The crazy part is, I don't have DE on my Kiev captain, but I do on my Udaloi captain, yet my average damage is the same in the two. It would be fun to see how it changes as I put more battles into them, but I am not sure that I want to play Kiev at T8.

Nice stats. I am grinding the Kiev as well headed toward the Khab. Have all intentions of FXP past the Trashcan as well.  I'm not doing quite as well as you are but I am enjoying learning a different DD style of play.

Thanks Bullitt. I may be jaded on my judgement that Kiev is better tier for tier by my personal performance. The server stats don't support it, they still support Khab as being the strongest.

But the ability to drive at 43 knots, and gun people down with 10% fire chance, and laser beam shells at 23km at tier 7 is pretty ridiculous. From my experience with Leningrad, I don't think that Minsk will really be any different. It is smaller than Kiev, so even though it lacks one gun, it may be more powerful tier for tier.

My biggest issue with the Kiev so far is the HP; 1 pen from a BB and half your health is gone. And it's not quite as easy to kite away from incoming fire since it's so long. If I stay out of harms way I do big damage numbers and set a lot of fires. If I get spotted early and take couple hits, its a short game.

Yeah man. That is really hard to deal with in Kiev. It is really long and has a VERY wide turning radius.

Dodging is something of a chore in it sometimes. It really can feel dependent on RNG and player inexperience sometimes. If you come across an experienced player, even with a 12 second shell flight time to hit you, that almost 800 meter turning circle may as well be driving in a straight line.

Anybody using the new speed boost module that makes it 50% longer? I got one as a prize in ranked and have been using it on my Kiev. Feels like I have speed boost almost the whole game.

This is what I've noticed too.. With previous VMF DD I can dodge, duck dip, dive and... dodge... away from even focus fire of 5-6 ships at a time and still get away. With Kiev, it's hard to evade from even 2. It handles like a pig compared to other DD I've played... which as a BB main, is saying quite a bit, when I'm calling a DD "handling like a pig" lol

funny, when I am in my Kiev most times shells are easy to avoid, at least when I am harassing a BB at moderate range.... even a Cruiser from max range has all but any luck at all hitting me... I find it quite maneuverable

Honestly, for the Kiev you're better off doing the turn then go in a straight line for a bit then turn again. Since it's so damn fast even "small" turns really add up.

Because they are so short-ranged, everyone forgets that the Kiev has torps. Ten 70-knot torps.
