Will there ever be Submarines?

Hey i am pretty new to the game and i am really enjoying it by far one of the best PC games i have ever played.I really enjoy using torps with the destroyers its so much fun. I'm sure someone has asked this before but as i was playing i wondered why aren't there submarines in the game? I think that would make it more awesome than it already is. And make the other ships able to carry depth charges and other anti submarines weapons so that the submarines aren't super op. Have they thought about adding them??? or is it going to happen in the future?

They have.  They concluded it wouldn't work.  Submarines are too slow and too fragile for fleet actions.  If you want to replicate what you're probably imagining submarine game play to be like, play Japanese Destroyers -- specifically the Isokaze, Minekaze and Mutsuki.

Um...before everyone posts "that link" let me be friendly:

 

No.  No subs.  Search in the forums, this has been brought up tons of times.  WG has said no lots of times.  Does that mean subs will NEVER be part of this?  Never say never...but it is highly highly highly unlikely they will be present.  They have told us the game engine cannot handle it.  *shrug*

 

Subs have no place in a surface engagement as this.  Max speed underwater - 7kts.  Max on surface - NY top speed.  Hit points are based on displacement so you have next to no life.  People [edited]enough about "cloaked dds" and "torp soup" enough as it is - a sub is just a very slow destroyer with A) way better concealment, B) less armor, C) less life, D) fewer guns.

 

It's probably not happening.  This is, however, the same parent company that said T10 TDs and Meds would never happen in WoT and well...see where that went. 

 

Who knows.  Time will tell.  But don't hold your breath.  You want subs, best bet is to go to that other naval game on Steam. 

 

Edit - Drat!  Beat by the mouse.  I was going to reference a post she had, something about driving a mutsuki B hull at half speed if you want to see how a sub would work.

I hope not. Currently we have a perfect rock-paper-scissors balance. Only thing they need to twitch is remove smoke and probably torpedoes from DDs.

While I understand that you are new, and possibly new to the forums, this topic has been repeated so many times ad nauseum that I am just going to make this short. Never say never, but I doubt subs will make it into pvp play. Possibly against bots but doubtful.

And if they did that, then we'd NEVER hear the end of people wanting them in the game... best just to ignore them all-together

I see feasibility in it for PvE campaigns or events but with regards to it being in PVP, an absolute no.

Now that I go that out. For the pace of this game subs are simply too slow. And Anti Submarine Warfare(ASW) simply takes way too much time.

 

So no, subs are not coming.

We need to collect the names of everyone asking for submarines.

Then have random torpedoes fired at them - anytime in the game, including spawn.

... complaints?  You wanted subs...

Exactly.  No need to model an underwater environment or set up an entirely different control scheme.  I would welcome a fresh challenge that finally provides an opportunity for many ships to put their already-modeled depth charges to good use.

Sorry, but that is a weak slippery slope argument.  Even if that prediction does prove accurate, and there is an increase in requests for playable PvP subs, WG can simply continue to ignore them.  This has never been difficult.  Refusing to entertain a promising idea because a side effect might involve a few more forum threads to not click on?  I don't see the logic.

Subs in co-op convoy missions as targets would be cool, but other than that, no, there will never be any submarines in the game.

I'm going to add one more thing here, limit your speed to a quarter speed, and no more than half speed.

If you think about the subject, there is a consistent desire by some percentage of players to have submarines in the game. It has been expressed at least a hundred times, but could be in the thousands. 

 

So rather than make them "player controlled" they could be inserted into the game as AI, even in random matches. They of course would be coded so their last target would be the enemy submarine, they do not pursue the enemy submarine, so on so forth. They could be responsible to patrol certain areas of the map, assigned randomly every match so you could not predict where they would show up. Their appearance in-game could also be random, like cyclones, everyone's favorite weather interdiction.

 

Everybody would get a limited load of depth charges to drop. And too of course, you could gun them if they surfaced to fire torps.  All that plus the red team could make for some very intense games.  

 

Perhaps WoWS/WG could look into adding subs in that manner. It could prove an interesting addition.

Not sure about this idea. I can just see it: down to 2 players left in the game, you briefly spot the red player and give chase when BLAM, you were sunk by randombotsub007. If you thought some of the forum complaints were bad, wait for this one. Sorry, nice idea but in actual gameplay, getting sunk by a bot in PvP kinda stinks.

The only way to make subs work would be to add depth charges, hedgehogs, and have the subs be bots only.

any ship can be a sub if you put enough holes in it.

 

Ah, the key difference between submarines and other ships is that submarines can rise again...
