Freddy Grober's Secondaries ... sigh, yea they are bad :(

The more I play this ship - the more I get annoyed in regards to just how useless the secondaries are on this thing. I played a couple battles over the past week in a Bismarck as well as Freddy Grober. The difference in secondary battery damage is huge ... except its 3x lower on the Grober. I'll give you a perfect example.
 

Bismarck battle (mostly against tier 7, 8, 9).

• Secondary hits (246).
• Total Secondary Damage (48,978).
• Fires (11).
• Fire damage (30,122).

 

Freddy Grober battle (mostly 8, 9, 10).

• Secondary hits (312).
• Total Secondary Damage (21,098).
• Fires (7).
• Fire damage (14,340).

 

That, right there, is just one of the games. Some were even worse. Its not a secret why this is happening, both Bismarck and Grober have (/6) modifier when it comes to armor pen. Below tier 8, Bis can pen most of the ships but at tier 9, 10 the Grober becomes useless because its secondaries can't pen anything except for the superstructure so you are basically relying on fires.

 

So yea ... this sucks.

You realize the two ships have the exact same secondary batteries, right?  What you're observing is merely seeing more and more ships that your secondaries can't pen.

Base/4 for 150's, base/6 for the 105s. The 105s are terrible for anything but fires at tier 8-10, which is Freddy's neighborhood. Bis sees 6-10, and so has a much higher chance to face enemies which can be damaged by the 105s. That is the real reason.

The Fat Freddy, I agree, does feel like a step backwards when coming from Bismark; albeit not quite as bad as Gniesenau IMHO (I was not impressed). Ive an 18 point Generaladmiral commanding him, full kit secondaries with the rest of the kit going to concealment - dropping it down to 13 (!) KM. It makes a massive difference, that concealment, ive found, especially later in the game when you need to hide that crucial few moments to repair/recover.

 

Still, unless the next patch buffs him in some way I dont yet know of, Ill be dropping Fat Freddy for King Kurryfurst.   Bismark, of course, stays put.

Yea most of my best games in the Fat Freddy have been where ive dished 100K+ damage - but the secondaries were less than 10% of that. Makes it very frustrating indeed with the horrendous RNG of primaries, especially inside 10km.  Tier for tier, Fat Freddy's secondaries dont hold up; you gain nothing as far as secondaries (and only slightly as far as AA) on the supersized Bismark; while giving up size, maneuverability and RNG - for guns that still troll you too hard.

To put it another way, a good portion of Freddy's secondaries can bow pen tier 8-10 BBs without help. Kurry can't do that without IFHE.

 

In any case, all the tier 9s of every type are oddballs, so Freddy would feel OP if she had an 150-heavy or Gneis' all-128 line-up.

I tried stepping up from Bismarck to the Big Fred, and regretted it.  I'll probably sell her here in the new future.  In addition to Frederick being disappointing herself. . . high tier gameplay just sucks.

 

Same reason I've retired my Baltimore despite the fact that she's been buffed and she was always my favorite US cruiser class.

I really liked the Freddy, especially with the 420's and had little complaints about the secondaries. I also realize that secondaries are the Bismarck's  "thing", so I'm fine with them not being quite as good on the Freddy/Großer, the 420's make up for it imo.

 

But hey I prefer the Freddy/Iowa, Großer/Monty over the Izumo/Yamato anyway.
