Hitting them with enough damage will cause them to lose most or all of their progress in capping, thereby keeping them from capping, and keeping them from getting additional points towards winning the match. It's not damage based. Any hit will reduce the cap points a ship by half. Splash damage may count (Not sure if it's splash damage or desync making near hits cut cap points). One ship can keep resetting 2-3 ships pretty easily at a distance WITHOUT just charging into the CAP and dying. This can save a game if you have someone on your team trying to CAP theirs.
