125 DeathLord1969 Members 1,002 posts 4,096 battles Report post #1 Posted March 2, 2017 What is it with players that will smoke their cruisers, sit there and do nothing? What's the point? You can't spot for your team. You can't see anything to kill yourself and you're not trying to cap. So what is the point? Just watched a FIJI captain, in ranked, twice, sit there in the same match in his smoke & do nothing. The second time he did it, the red dd was about 6 clicks off his right side & as soon as he finally slipped out, dead. It's bad enough to get the afks/bots in ranked along with the one sided matches as it is. Ranked is not all that fun & engaging. I normally have a decent run at this time, but today was a crap-fest. On a side note, restless fire, while it looks good and all, is bad luck to me. Twice now I mounted it & twice rng says "nope".

1,289 [BOTES] awildseaking Members 2,404 posts 10,764 battles Report post #3 Posted March 2, 2017 Selfishness. I almost lost a match earlier because everyone would come into my smoke. With every ship concealed, nobody could spot or shoot. Nobody wants to be that guy who stays outside of the smoke and gets focus fired. They could just stay concealed, but spotting isn't rewarded equally to damage.

Letting the team know your initial plan helps a lot. I don't have CE yet, but find that even when/if I get spotted, my team mates and a fair bit of dodging comes to the rescue lol. Of course the self preservation moments can turn to offensive opportunities if someone is spotting. Edited March 2, 2017 by _WaveRider_

I am 60matches in and stuck at Rank9. I know i am better than a lot of the players in r10-r6, but the flip flopping is brutal.

Well, I don't think people go into ranked to show how great their teamwork with strangers is. I only bothered to fight 6 rounds of ranked, with a 100% win ratio, and left it at that cause I don't care for Two Face's philosophy. Then instead of retreating since he popped his smoke, waited for the chance that somebody will provide vision. When that never happened, he moved out and died. Some folks tunnel vision and wont realize theres smoke or a ship there until they get lit up. Then they look for whats shooting them. Its in smoke? Turn. Solution; don't let them know. Not something I do often, but is amusing how often it pays off.

I have 176 battles, 59.09% WR and 3 stars in 2 atm. Go ahead and figure 200-250 to rank out. I'm not specifically saying that for you, but as a generalization. I figured I would/will do the same. 326 Captain_Dilbert Members 1,494 posts 12,756 battles Report post #14 Posted March 2, 2017 As an IJN DD (Shira in Ranked) player, I love it when cruisers sit in smoke. One step better is getting a cruiser and a BB in the same smoke, and every once in awhile you get a DD thrown in for the trifecta. The only problem with the trifecta is that one of the ships usually becomes a meatshield for the others . The other thing I hate is when a DD indiscriminately pops smoke approaching a cap and then does not push through the smoke. All this does is create a torpedo magnet and blind your team, or force another DD (like me) to push beyond the smoke with often puts me in detection range of the enemy approaching the far side of the cap. At least that's a plausible situation I could see myself smoking then sitting still for. Hopefully without the dying at the end part though This is likely it. Another possibility is he mis-managed his spotters, and didn't smoke up when he had them. Once we drop our smoke, we're mostly defenseless until it comes up again. You leave the smoke, and you are ASKING to get focused if you get detected and start shooting. The hope is, well smoke is out, someone will spot and I can get some licks in. My recommendation would be to play your Leander a bit more to get a better understanding of how and why smoke cruisers do what they do. Nobody likes RN CLs except people that play them. Even other RN CL players enjoy nothing more than catching an RN CL outside their smoke and ripping them apart.

Sorry, but I was in a Nagato, so I'm not going to spot for the Fiji, sitting in smoke, while there's a red dd on the other side of him. If it's for self preservation, why not hug an island instead of sitting in open water?

Yep, I've been going back and forth between 10 and 9 for the last 19 matches. Its amazing how many YOLOs come into Ranked and then ruin it for the rest of the team at this level. It just shows how many people were carried to ranks 12-8 and still haven't learned how to be a team player.

On a side note, restless fire, while it looks good and all, is bad luck to me. Twice now I mounted it & twice rng says "nope". Well, as a decent Belfast main player in ranked (129 battles to get to 5, 57% WR, Slow_n_Low) I feel that my job and how I use smoke as follows: Follow up the dd's close at the beginning and when the enemy dd's show up, I typically stop and smoke (if the dd's haven't smoked up for me) to prevent getting hammered by everything on the other team that wants to kill the Belfast (counter goes up to 7 quite quickly ), hit hydro on and start to pound the dd's. If the dd's smoke themselves up, then radar gets used if they are in range of it. Torps will get spotted with my first hydro or the dd's spotting them. Once the d's are dead or out of range, then I hammer whatever good target cruiser or bb appears. If nothing is showing, I am not going to abandon my precious smoke just because there are no targets. Ships move and spotting changes from 1 second to the next. Just because you can't see anything now doesn't mean it might not change. Once you exit the smoke it is hard to get back in it. I will start to exit smoke with about 20 seconds left After that initial DD firefight I will retreat back a little bit or to the sides close to an island where I can isolate my LOS on 1 or 2 targets, If I have smoke and start to attract attention I will use it just off the side of an island so that I can get behind it. After that stage, it can usually be determined whether we are defending or attacking. If I have good spotting, I will smoke up, if not I try to use islands. If I'm getting focused I'll pop the smoke and try to use it to reposition. If I am in a spot where I can't be focus fired, I'm not going to use smoke. Which yeah I dont see the point of smoke in this game either. You smoke because you dont want to get cit by a bb or something but than you smoke and cant see them, then they hit radar and can now see you. 4,521 [WOLF7] awiggin Members 12,620 posts Report post #25 Posted March 2, 2017 Don't know why OP thinks this is uncommon or surprising. You often see RN ships push as far as they can then smoke up, not considering the possibility that no one has pulled far enough forward to spot for them. They sit blind, since their sonar is limited and hope for rain.....
