Mutsu mini review

Having a few more battles under my belt, I gotta say- this ship is the real deal!!   Never in my 4000+ games have I consistently gotten this many 100k+ damage games in one ship.   Whomever compared it to a USN BB was spot on- sorta.   It tanks and brawls quite well- but it can actually hit things at range, too!

I tend to forget it has torpedoes- the guns and secondaries crank out so much damage, whatever it is I'm fighting with is usually dead before an opportunity to use them comes up.  Last game I churned out 4 kills and 128k in damage.  It was like a runaway train, just crushing everything in it's path, lol.

It's a rather handsome ship, I believe it's a Nagato class.  Certainly nicer to look at than the tech tree counterpart Fuso, with that silly looking pagoda mast.  I like the look of it's premium camo as well.

For those still wavering over whether or not to spend the dough:

1.  8 16" guns- at tier 6.

2.  Those guns are rather accurate, too.  Dispersion seems not to be much of a problem, so far.  It's a battleship, so you're going to sit and watch your shells do goofy things sometimes, but all things considered, it's pretty accurate for a BB.

3. enough secondaries to choke a horse.  You may as well have a couple of light cruisers strapped to your sides...  I'm in no way specced for them, and only have 6 points worth of skills on it's captain- and they still do good work.  A full secondary spec would be wicked.

4. torpedoes, to boot.  4 single launchers.  7km range, and 10,800 damage/ea.  Enough to unpleasantly surprise those seeking to close range brawl with you.  Not especially deadly on thier own, but they have to respect them.

5. like all IJN BB's, AA is kinda meh.  The majority of your power is at the 5km range, from your 4, twin 5" DP guns- 40 dpm.   Your close in AA is awful- just 3, 30 cal machine guns, and a couple of twin 40's that don't contribute much.

6 reasonably maneuverable.  Mutsu is somewhat short and fat- like a US BB, and it turns fairly well.  Nimble enough to dodge torpedoes fairly well.  26.5 kt top speed is comparable with the T6 German and IJN BB's.  It feels sluggish at times, but that may just be because I've been playing so many cruisers lately!

7. armor.   25mm plating on the ends and the casemate,  Up to 330mm on the armored belt.  It's basically an all or nothing scheme.  There is some thicker deck armor aft around turret #3, to help protect your backside.   While it's reasonably tanky, you will take lots of damage from hits to the bow, stern, and casemate.  You really want to try and take most hits on the (angled) belt armor.  Turrets are 300+mm too.  ** so far, MM has been throwing me a lot of softballs.  I'm interested to see how it stands up to the pounding from Colorado, North Carolina, and Amagi's 16" guns.

Personally, I think it's well worth the $$.   As an added bonus, you'll now have a good IJN BB trainer, to boot.

If you like to reach out and punch your enemies right in the chompers, this is a good choice!  I'll leave a full review up to Mouse, but you get the idea.

Been looking at my Premium time whittling down and am close to purchasing this boat with her Big Bundle. The flag looks cool and I could use some Doubs, haven seen many Mutsu's in game so.... That makes me kinda want her more. Problem is, Ishizuchi is... not so great and that is the lone example of Prem IJN BBs.

Tho... I like Nagato a lot. T6 is BB central, might as well have one from as many Nationalities as possible.

Completely different beasts... Ishizuchi is mediocre at best... if not plain bad. Mutsu is a good example of WG new policy on wows about premiums, equal if not better than the regular line ships.

If you like BBs, will enjoy a lot Mutsu. Armor is not reliable, but guns are pretty decent. A Nagato hull (ok, the bad one, but nagato) at tier 6.

Love the ship. Ishizuchi, however, is collecting rust on my harbor. Mutsu much better trainer and not a bad earner.

Anything larger than 14" is going to give Mutsu a bad day. You can still hold your own against Bayren and Warspite, but once you get tossed up with the big boys (particularly tier VIII BB/CCs) you will lose against any competent opponent. They auto-bounce your shells when angled and their 15"/16" rifles open you up like a tin can regardless of your angling. That being said, I really enjoy Mutsu.

I've discovered that the secret to Mutsu is to play her like an ultra-hard hitting cruiser with amazing secondaries.

Specced her for secondaries and pushed them to 6km range, which is pretty decent. I'll spend my remaining 9 points boosting survivability, since her greatest weakness is getting chipped to death.

Oh I gave her a plenty hard time with 13" shells.

Secondary spec'd, keep the armor angled, run premium DCP and RT, flag up for anti-fire, accelerated RT, and 20% RT boost.  This ship has lots of beef.  Fire damage is repairable. More beef X 20% is a lot of burnt beef repaired.

As others have noted, it isn't designed to go head to head with T8 BBs; it's still a T6 BB.  And a T8 BB captain who knows what he is doing should be able to dispatch you without much difficulty.  But those16 inchers can reap a good chuck of HP from broadside T8 BBs, so T8 BB captains still gotta respect what you've got.  And even more so those T8 CAs.

Mutsu is pretty fun.

I think a lot of people forget it has torps even if only 2 per side, it's fun hitting things with them.

Yeah it's squishy, but it's fun, worth the $60 for the high package and remember, I know you know but just saying, that price bloat is the dubloons & premium time. My main IJN captain is in it and i prot specced it :D, lower fire chance, fire/flooding times...fun boat fight mid range and negate that dispersion.

I regularly citadeled the Mutsu while I was grinding my Nagato. Angling didn't seem to matter a whole lot. Now I'm grinding my Bayern. I ran across my first Mutsu last night and this is what happened...

I plan on getting one eventually because I think it would be fun to play Nagato in its 1920s form, but Mutsu's dispersion is absolutely awful. I shelled one in my Indianapolis for almost 5 full minutes at 10-12K and he couldn't hit me. Well, he got 1 glancing hit that barely did any damage. I've never seen a 16" hit do so little damage on Indianapolis. I'm still not sure how though. I don't go after Nagatos by myself on Indy, because I know they CAN get a shell into me at that range and it HURTS, but Mutsu's shells just sailed everywhere every time. I did 38k damage to him and kept him on fire the whole time until he sank. Once I realized that he wasn't likely to hit me I just WASD'd and pointed my bow at him right after he fired. I ran into another one a day earlier in Graf Spee and it was the same story. The ship doesn't seem to be able to hit the narrow profile of a cruiser with any reliability.

To be fair to Mutsu, that's true of every tier 6 and 7 BB in the face of 15" or 16" guns.
