Khabarovsk torpedo upgrade

There is nothing I hate more than when a new player makes a suggestion on something they just started doing... like a new BB player saying theres too many torps in WoWs, but now i'm gonna do it.  I finally got my first tier X, the Khab.  2 wins no losses so far, great, fun, gunboat.  now heres my beef:

 

This ship comes with default torps that are good.  There is an option to research 'alternative' ET-46 torpedoes for 30,000 xp.  Here is what they do:

 

Reload time:  116 seconds   ---> 127 seconds

Maximum damage:  15,100   --->   19,500

Torpedo Speed:  56 knots   --->   53 knots

Torpedo Range:  10km   --->   6km

 

The nerfs on this are so extreme, they can never make up for the increased damage potential.   Adding to the torpedo speed, instead of subtracting, would at least make it a viable close range defensive option.   I know many view 'worse' options as no big deal, but it really affects the appearance and polish of the game when things like this occur.  If an alternative option is not at least somewhat competitive... then it should not exist.  It only serves to clutter the game and make it look unprofessional.  I suggest adding speed to the short range 'alternative' or simply removing it althogether.

I mostly agree with you.

 

As a Udaloi owner I've been staring at Khaba dreaming of the future and trying to rationalize those torpedoes.

 

I think they would make sense if suicide rushing made sense at tier ten as it amounts to another ~30k of potential alpha. That said, sensible opportunities to do so in a Khabarovsk are few and far between. Whereas a 10km torpedo is almost always useful if for nothing else than making life difficult on someone hiding in smoke.

 

6km tho is mighty close for smoke flushing and borders on useless. Even if the upgrade torps had 7 or 8 kms of range the choice becomes one of play style and doctrine and less of a non-choice.

What's wrong with it?

You get another 4400dmg per torpedo, which puts out more alpha than a Yugumo, Fletcher, Gearing or Z-52.

Torp for Torp, you are neck and neck for damage with Shimakaze's 20km torps.

They are obviously YOLO torps or torps you use around island corners.

 

Or, look at the bigger picture.

10km torps with 15,100dmg is already borderline too good on Khab, which is a gunboat.

And you expect to get 19,500dmg torps with no trade off?

Never use the 6km torps.

 

Always us the 10KM torps.

 

Why? Because you can stealth fire them at dumb bb's and cruisers. And catch unwary things in ssmoke.

^^ that's kind of his point. 6km torps are far too situational and ships at that level will melt you with secondaries on a Yolo rush.

10km torps are the way to go. At tier 10, the "upgrade" torps just encourage suicidal behavior in the campy meta we have. It's like the Shima 8km torps, they are there and you sure can have some fun with them and OMG the speed. But in reality, the Shima 12km torp is the best bet for doing dmg, and more importantly, living longer to do more dmg.

The base torps are better because your a gun ship and torps are opportunity only weapons for you and given that you can be seen easily you need the 10KM.

Now imagine if WG had taken all those torps and made them mostly harmless by slamming a 2km+ detection range and took your guns away. Welcome to the IJN tier 10 experience of the 'balancing' patch. 

 

Oh, btw, your 10km torps are 1km detect so yeah, there's no reason to change them to the 'upgrade'. Those torps alone are much more potent than any shimakaze torpedo load... despite the slow speed they give a BB no survivable reaction time.

Only reason to research the short torps is to make the Khrab an Elite ship. Or you could have an ultimate snub nose torps on a T10  suicide boat with the  use the torp boost skill and have 4.8KM fish that go 58 kts. I'd go with the Yugumo for that...and have a change to kill and live to fight on..
