Hi folks,

So I decided to start poking around with creating textures for fun and to plug a few holes in the custom skins I've collected from the community.  So I pulled down GIMP and the WoWs unpacker and trial and error'd my way towards a decent output.  I picked my old favorite to start with and then kinda went on a roll:

HIJMS Nagato

First I updated the paint work to IJN Kure Grey, lightened the wood decking and adjusted the weathering.  I've always been irked by the bridge windows on the WG version being much too large, so I scaled down the size(this included fixing the normal maps).  Out of all the changes I personally think it improves to overall look of the ship the most.  Blast bags were changed to light brown canvas that was used in wartime and the lower port holes have been covered over to match her late war refit.  The IJN sometimes painted the main fire control director white on their heavy units as a recognition feature and I felt it adds a little character to the otherwise grey ship.  Finally I recolored the Chrysanthemum to look a little more like gold and adjusted the anchors to be grey instead of black.

HIJMS Amagi

Second ship I worked on was the HIJMS Amagi.  I gave her the same treatment as the Nagato by adjusting the colors, covering some of the portholes and adding the white fire control director.  In addition I applied a white identification stripe and an Ichigo emblem on the funnel for a little extra visual interest.

HIJMS Mikasa

HIJMS Mikasa as she appeared in 1905 during the Russo Japanese War.  Same basic approach as the previous two ships, maybe not as jazzy as the 1902 look but this is what she rocked at Tsushima

KMS König Albert

Applied the standard High Seas Fleet two tone scheme of Squirrel Grey (Lfd. Nr. 3) on the hull surfaces and Silver Grey (Lfd. Nr. 4) on the upper works, in addition I also lightened the wood decking.  During my research I found a picture of her during internment in Scapa Flow with a colored funnel and two white identification stripes which I also attempted to recreate.

This is not an actual MS scheme sported by the USN but was inspired by the ones used on CVEs.  Unfortunately I am still very much a novice at this and not rivet countery enough to match one exactly.  Still I don't think it would look out of place.  The main thing I was shooting for is to have it match the sub assemblies it shares with other USN skins created by Tanz and others.

Links should include a zip files that once unzipped file should include a content folder and camoflages.xml file that are placed into the latest resmods folder (0.6.1.1).  Note camoflage.xml stops camouflages from being displayed the game so that custom skins are displayed.

Anyway that's all for now.  I would like to thank Tanz for the inspiration and allowing me to use some of the shared sub assemblies he had already created for his previous works.

Let me know if anything doesn't work right, this is the first time out after all.

Cheers,

-JB

Loosely based on the MS-33 schemes for Independence class CVLs.  Color palette is Pale Gray 5-P, Haze Gray 5-H and Navy Blue 5-N.  Actually found a pretty good little collection of patterns on Wikipedia.   I will probably take a crack at the Independence herself though I am a little leary since it appears a lot of the details are baked into the texture instead of part of the model.

Arky Beta skin based on an experimental scheme seen on the Nevada, I used #5 Standard Navy Gray as the base and 5-O Ocean Gray for the pattern.  The deflection markers on the turret were used on USN BBs during the interwar period.  Since the turrets are shared with the stock Wyoming I also included a standard navy grey version to match.  Note if you are looking for a fully upgraded Wyoming I would recommend Mr.Grind's MS-31 scheme

The Yellow Rose of Texas in MS-31a Design 8B (or as close as I can make it).  Pattern is composed of Haze Gary 5-H, Ocean Gray 5-O and Navy Blue 5-N.  It was quite an exercise in patience hunting down all the gun shields.

Standard Kure Gray treatment with white fighting top.  Actually interesting files to work on because this is one of the older ships and they used some different techniques at the time.

HMS Ajax (22) Leander Class

The texture is based on a scheme I found for the HMS Ajax color shifted so shared modules do not conflict with the Warspite.  HMS Ajax along with her Kiwi sister HMNZS Achilles and the heavy cruiser HMS Exeter engaged the Admiral Graf Spee at the Battle of the River Plate.  She was active throughout the Med until taking a bomb hit in the boilers during convoy escort duty requiring a two year stay in the yards.  She was back in action Feb of 44 and participated in the bombardment force for D-Day.

Not much to say, just an amalgamation of colors and pattern schemes I could find for WW2 RN ships.  Fun project though, the superstructure was a lot easier to play around with than some others I've worked with.

The Lady in Violet is the only ARP ship I regularly skipper so I gave her an update.  I pulled up some refs on the internet(there is a dearth of imagery of the actual ship :P) so I could update the colors and add some details to spice her up.  The overall effect is very fairly subtle but I figured I would share it anyway.

The Indie in a MS33 7a inspired scheme.  I was a little worried about losing some of the details since a lot of the pipes and greebles appeared to be baked on the texture rather than modeled.  Still I am pretty happy with the result.

I put together a skin for the Shimakaze based on Char Aznable's MS-06S Zaku II from the series Mobile Suit Gundam.  I primarily used the Real Grade and Gundam Origins versions for the inspiration and details.  Note that the main fire control director/finder and 12.7cm guns are shared with the Yūgumo.   If you are concerned about the shared files do not copy over the files for the main battery, director and finder.  It does not include the flag, I have about as much interest in maintaining flag mods as practicing Kendo without armor.

CV-4 USS Ranger in Measure 33, Design 1A or as close I can get it.  A bunch of the textures are mirrored across both sides which is a PITA with such a asymmetric pattern.  I made a prewar skin for the Stock Hull, however, the top hull files work on the stock version, if you want you can copy the top hull files and rename them to the 41 version and have the 33 pattern for both.

"Sister Sara" in the Measure 32 Design 11A camouflage she sported in 44, this quite honestly is my favorite CV scheme of the war.  Due to some mirroring on the conning tower and a few splinter shields I needed to make a few compromises but overall this is my best work and as close as I can make it to the real thing.  Both top and stock hulls are included in this scheme.

South Dakota class in the Measure 32/11D camouflage that was sported by the USS Indiana.  There was unfortunately quite a bit of mirroring in the texture file so while the starboard side is pretty spot on, I had to compromise in a number of places t'larboard.   I have included hull numbers for all the ships in class so you have a choice between the "SoDak", "Big I", "Mamie" and "Lucky A".  USS Alabama is the default skin however if you drill down to >>content\gameplay\usa\ship there are extra folders for the other ships, just take the texture folder from them and paste it into the battleship directory if another sister strikes your fancy.

Thanks, for the feedback it is very much appreciated.

Actually the skins should not require any updates for the latest version.  Unlike the flags file that beaks pretty much every patch, ship files very rarely change (Some of the skins I use from Tanz date back to Closed Beta).  In case you haven't run mods before when a new patch is issued the client creates a new folder in the res_mods folder and any mod files in the previous patch folder need to be moved to the latest.  So in this case the files and folders in 0.6.1.1 need to be moved to 0.6.2.0

Working on a skin for the Leander that is based roughly on a scheme I saw sported by the Ajax.  I'm really noticing how constraining the shared module scheme WG uses is since the RN really used a wide color pallet.

Cheers,

-JB

These look fantastic.  So how do they work?  (Newish to mods).  If I have coin-camo on my ships and then download the mod, what do I see?

Hi Sock,

To the best of my knowledge there are two methods for custom skins, first is creating camouflage files and the second is updating the base texture files.  I use the later method since I've been hooked on Tanz's works since way back in CBT (back then the camo did not even exist yet).  If you update the base texture files every ship of the class will use that as the base skin.

The WG camoflages overlay on top of the base texture, meaning that if you are using the custom texture method and WG camo you get some weird results.  Therefore you need to run a modified camoflage.xml file to suppress the display of the WG camo (Note this just hides them from appearing and doesn't cancel the effects).  I've included a blank camouflages.xml file in my download to suppress all camouflages.   Since I run a lot community created custom textures suppressing camo on all ships is not a big deal for me, however, if you want to be more particular about which ships you want to hide the camo from I would take a look at this thread for greater detail.

If you are still on board after that description the links I have are for zip files that once unzipped file should include a content folder and camoflages.xml file that are placed into the latest resmods folder (0.6.2.1).  Note that like all mod content when a new patch is issued the client creates a new folder in the res_mods folder and any mod files in the previous patch folder need to be moved to the latest.

Hope that clears up any questions.

Cheers,

-JB

Thanks Grizwald!

So I decided to take a break from lining up MS 33 dazzel patterns on the Ranger and do something for fun.  Let's set the mood:

High 5 for using OneDrive lol. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I love your Minotaur skin. I can't wait till I grind out that line.

Thanks Frisco, glad you like the skin and I'll eventually be adding more of the British CLs.  One Drive seems to be working out pretty well so far, though I do wish they provided analytics. It would be nice to get a handle on the download rates.
