A question about Captains Skills and Point Utilization

Trying to get a consensuses on if it's better to use all your captains skills points all the time or if it's better to save up points for a higher point skill? Obviously, you'd have to pay more to continuously re-distribute your points but what do you do with say a 12 point captain where you've used 10 of 12 points? Is it better to spend the 2 unused points now and re-distribute latter or is it better to save them up?

 

What say you?

I just save up, because I don't have the doubloons for respecing. However, since Elite XP  and Free XP can now be used to respect captains and my Gneisenau and Mogami will soon have 19 point captains, I think I may start doing that in some cases. But it's just not a very efficient way of spending your doubloons, Free XP, or Elite XP.

I think that depends on how often you get doubloons and what you use them for. I mainly use them for ports, permanent camo and the occasional 3pt captain (25 gold is worth 8k XP to me) for that ship I just finished grinding if I don't already have a captain ready. If you don't mind paying between $2 and $2.97 to respec a captain, then by all means use the points and respec later. If that is too much or you need your doubloons for other things, then save the points. 

 

I do a little of both. I have a bunch of 5pt captains, especially in DDs where there is definitely a 2pt skill I could use, but I save them for SI or some other 3 pt skill. For the 11pt captain I share between my Cleveland and Atlanta, I used the extra point on PT as I used the first point on PM as they are both spec'd for AA. Later down the road at 14 pts, I may respec to get that point back to get CE to go with AFT. But for now, having both those 1 pt skills are worth a respec later. Now, I don't plan on using the other 3 points until 14 as I really want CE.

 

For the cost of a respec, you can get it to $2 by buying the 25,000 doubloon special for $99.99. When there is a sale, it may go lower. Right now the normal cost to buy 500 doubloons is $2.97.

Thanks all for your comments. Like you, I've taken the economical approach and held on to unused points until I ground out the next level 3 or 4 skill. I was just curious if players thought there was some value in taking something like adrenaline rush while you ground out the experience for higher level skills.

If I had the doubloons I would use points while grinding. For example, I have a 10pt captain that I just moved to the New Mexico. Fire Prevention sounds like something I could use, with all the fire spammers mid to high tier. So I would like to use AR and PT while grinding up to that 4th point for FP and then respec'ing, but I feel doubloons are precious enough (fun funds are low), that I will hold those points instead. If your cash flow for WG is different, then by all means, use the points and respec for that $2-3 in doubloons.

I spend the points , I also with 3-19 point Captains use the Elite XP for moving up a Captain on a new ship were as before it could take months to get a 18 point Captain now you could do a 19 Captain in weeks using various methods to Get XP

I tend to hold onto my points unless I know that the line I am working up with that commander needs me to get another 1 or 2 point skill to get to the end goal build I want to make for ships on that line. Dabooooons be expensive.

This is a money question rather than an ops question.  The answer is directly proportional to how much money you've got.  If you can print doubloons without concern, then the optimal ops answer is to assign as you get them and re-assign as needed.  If you must watch your doubloons carefully (or have none at all), then it's best to identify the optimal skill set and work toward that set so that when you're all done you have the desired skill set without any re-assignment; no doubloon cost.
