I just heard about it. My heart goes out to the two who are missing. I hope the best for them and their families :Smile_honoring:

But why take it out in the first place?  Sure it would get bashed around in harbor, but it'd be preferable to let it get wrecked in port where no one would get hurt rather than to risk the lives of the crew in the middle of a hurricane.

Speaking of bashed around in harbor, I wonder how the Intrepid, Constitution, and the others are doing.

The goal was to move the historical ship before the storm made landfall.  Did you even read the article?

"The ship departed New London, Connecticut, for St. Petersburg, Florida, on October 25, according to the ship's Facebook page. Facebook postings bearing that date say things such as "I'm sure that Hurricane Sandy will be a major consideration when Bounty leaves for St. Petersburg later today," and "Bounty will be sailing East out to sea before heading South to avoid the brunt of Hurricane Sandy.""

Further,

"On Saturday, this post appeared: "Bounty's current voyage is a calculated decision... NOT AT ALL... irresponsible or with a lack of foresight as some have suggested. The fact of the matter is... A SHIP IS SAFER AT SEA THAN IN PORT!""

Let's hope our concerns lie with the families that lost loved ones than to continue a debate that serves no one.

You started the debate.  I was offering my opinion, and you had to come in and crap all over it.  If anyone's not being sensitive to the thread, it's you.

Built in 1960.  At 52 years old, it wasn't exactly "History".  That being said, it was really neat to tour the one time it was parked in harbor here.  It's really a shame to see it go, and I feel for the people who lost family members on it.

My prayers to those still missing. I hope they are found soon.

Even if it is a replica, it represented history. which carries the same weight as being history.

Awash yesterday morning prior to foundering.  One of two missing members recovered but didn't pull through (also a descendant of the original mutiny leader, which is a bit depressing in its own right).  Captain still has yet to be found.  Part of me wonders if he went down with her willingly.

I can understand taking the ship out of port. When it comes to Hurricanes, it is actually safer to take your ship to see and try to ride out the storm.

edit: I was wondering why they were sailing to the Caribean which would be toward the storm but according to the article, they were attempting to head east.

and just to add one more thing. she was only a replica built in 1960. Its not like she was the original ship she was based off of. I feel more saddened over the loss of those two crewman than the ship itself.

A ship is safer at sea, but a crew is safer in port.

Nah, I'm sure if they had stayed in port the entire crew would have drowned in the bathtub or something.  Better to take your chances in a hurricane.

I understand that one of the missing crew has been found.  The captain, however, appears to have gone down with the ship.  Undermanned as she was, I'm surprised they managed to keep up with the leak as long as they did.

Well if your sailing into the Hurricane than yes you might as well have stayed in port but they were trying to sail away from it.

Still, I can't help but wonder why they were set out whent hey did. They were heading to the winter berth in Florida, so it's not like they had a deadline to meet.

New London wasn't hit near as hard as New York, and Boston wasn't hit at all, so why not just weather the hurricane in Boston, which has the Charleston Naval Yard, which houses the Constitution, nearly four times the Bounty's size.
