+1!

Thank you for giving the wiki guys an opportunity to demonstrate some of the work we do! She was a fun ship to research, and hopefully everyone enjoyed learning her story as much as we did.

:)

Outside of Co-Op, Mutsu begins to suffer.

WARNING! WARNING! DANGER WILL ROBINSON! DANGER!

Thanks for the review LWM team, while I would have gladly gobbled up a 40s version this one looks like a pass.

Great write-up as always! I knew the ship would be...underwhelming...to say the least. The gimmicks it got are at odds with the other stats of the ship:

You have torpedoes! But bad armour and a high citadel that makes brawling inadvisable.
But really, you should brawl cuz torpedoes! Your secondary range sucks, so two torpedoes on limited arcs and slow turrets that are ill-suited to brawling are all you have. You might get the torpedoes off one time before getting triple citadel-led and heading back to port.
You have big guns! With terrible penetration values.

You have a massive air detection! Seriously? The thing has, for all intents and purposes, no AA.

People get hung up on "but muh 16" guns," but this is a game. The caliber of the guns doesn't matter if it doesn't have the actual stats to match. You are better off getting Warspite since you over-match just the same, have great accuracy, and the ship the guns come on is better protected, has better secondaries and better AA. I'll give Mutsu a pass. I'm still waiting for an IJN BB trainer worth a damn.

One would figure that after the Krasny Krym disaster and the Konig Albert fiasco, that retiering an existing line ship isn't an optimal thing to do. But then again, Prinz Eugen also showed that copy pasting a line ship for a premium doesn't work either.

She's still a battleship.  She can still perform.  She's just not going to make it easy on you.  This is a Battleship that will seriously punish you for your mistakes and make you work for your successes.  I honestly believe the upcoming buff to her rate of fire (30s instead of 35s) and gun handling (3.8º per second instead of 3.3º per second) will go a long way toward smoothing out some of her wrinkles.  For all of the nay-saying found in several reviews about the Mutsu, I honestly feel she's in just the right spot for a premium:  Not too powerful, not too weak.  She has obvious strengths and weaknesses.

Of course, if only the other premiums had this stigma.  Unfortunately for the Mutsu, there are premium battleships like the Scharnhorst which seem to have their cake and eat it too.  With Ashitaka on the horizon, is the Mutsu worth jumping on when she becomes available?  I just don't know.  If Ashitaka ends up at tier 7, she's already miles ahead of the Mutsu by simple grace of not having to contend with tier 5 and 6 Matchmaking.  For a player that's looking to acquire one (and only one) premium Battleship trainer, what do they do?  I don't envy their choice.  So while the Mutsu is an interesting design decision, having been well balanced for a tier 6 premium, I'm not sure she'll be a successful one.

I can't stress enough how frustrating it was for me to not knock out a really good (2,000 base experience) game in the Mutsu, only to manage it immediately in my Warspite and Nagato when I took a break from play testing.

Fat Albert is a great ship.

Fat Albert is a great ship.

It's OP as hell, which is what ryuukei meant; it was very arguably not a good idea for WG to release it in the state it's in.

The key here is the changes that are being made from testing to release.  How will she fare?  Unfortunately, a lot of this will depend on the thoughts of the early adopters - those who buy her right away.  Have the buffs gone too far?  If so, she'll be a true terror.  Add in Adrenaline Rush...  hmmmm.....

I'm a big Battleship fan, and I've played Japanese Battleships the most, so it's a shame that I'm ambivalent about the release of this ship. Maybe the upcoming changes will beef her up.

Short of them introducing a tier 3 aircraft carrier or changing how turtleback armour works, I think you're safe.  :P

An eagerly awaited review that confirmed early speculation.. She's both "Meh!" and Cool at the same time. Think I'll wait this one out for the moment. Mouse, you and Lert as has come to expected here have once again knocked it out of the park. Thank you both for the time spent on another great review! +1 :medal:
