So I am fairly experienced with battleships (Have up to the Amagi, played some german BBs, and Tirpitz), but the New mexico is just not clicking with me, what could I be missing?  Does anyone have any tips for me?  My commander has BFT, EM, SI, and soon AFT.

Not all ships click with everyone. I was really hating the New Mex for it's first few battles, because slow things give me cancer and the range (even with the range mod) was terrible. But I did manage to break 100k damage once I got the upgraded range, which then let me unlock the B hull, though I haven't actually used it yet.

Best I can say about the New Mex, from my experience with the New York and the lower tier german BBs, is to never put yourself where you can't keep firing at the enemy, or get to a position where you can do that quickly. That means don't go far out on a flank, especially if there turns out to only be one or two enemies there. Try to keep yourself in a central position, where your slow speed won't be as much of a detriment. That, and don't be afraid to not use one of your turrets if it means giving way too much broadside to the enemy.

I will try to take this into account, and we'll see how it goes!

Each nation has a different play style, and the earlier IJN and USN Battleships are like night and day. You play the New Mexico as a brawler and you try to get in close to other Battleships because your beats most of the other tier sixes. I think at tier six, only the Arizona can match the New Mexico with armor. So if you get in close and stay angled, then you'll do fine.

Bayern beats out New Mexico and Arizona when it comes to brawling. So with the USN BBs, you can brawl until you come up against a German BB, then you want to stay at more of a mid range and stay very angled.

I think their about equal 1v1, I love both honestly but they have their own strengths and weaknesses. A Bayern had to close to under 10km to get the most out of her guns, the sweet zone for the NM is about 12-14km, but then the Bayern had those awesome secondaries that makes it even sweeter to close it. Angled properly both ships are very hard to citadel.

That last part is why the Bayern is the superior brawler. The New Mexico may be hard to citadel, but the Bayern is impossible to citadel at brawling range, even if it gives it's broadside. Then the secondaries just tip the scales completely in favor of the Bayern. Then the icing on the cake is that the Bayern is faster, so it can better dictate where and when the brawl happens.

As the distance between the two increases, the scales start to even out and then tip towards the New Mexico since it has more guns and a longer range (if the range mod is used). But the point at which the New Mexico is "superior" is a point where the New Mexico isn't reliably accurate and it's only it's mass of shells that it fires that give it the lead.

Unlike the German Battleships which start with their best projectiles. And the IJN Battleships that start with 1930s projectiles the New Mexico starts with the extremely early 1400lb 1914 projectile. You have to get to the B hull to jump a few decades to the 1500lb AP Mk16.

I've got the hook up on New Mexico tips! :D

Best How To on YouTube.  Not bias though! =3

+1 UPK!

Though, there is absolutely NOTHING to like about the New Mexico...

Nope, I don't like her, I love her. lol Like you, she is my favorite ship in the game. Out of any tier and any country line, including any of my premiums, she takes the cake.

Very nice review UPK. I think you covered everything pretty well. From play style (she is made for mid-range to up close - but "can hit from range"), to AA capabilities and most importantly, Armor scheme and rudder shift time with not only deflecting incoming rounds and torp belt reduction, but being able to angle your outgoing shots.

One thing there is to note for those looking at his review and reading, the N.M. has a different firing arc compared to the Colorado and I believe the N.Y (would need confirmation, but the dispersion on the N.Y. is different so that may be what's making it a wash). To me, this is what makes the ship so fun as it's almost the "sweet spot" for USN BB's. We end up losing that with the Colorado with a higher arc and some other variances, more so with the N.C. with the loss of a turret, weaker and an extremely exposed citadel, though we gain speed an range.

@ the OP:

All in all she is a great ship to play, if that is your play style. It's one of those things, easy to pick up, long time to master. While I don't claim to be a New Mexico guru, I have had my fair share of seat time in her at 1,174 games in "just" that ship alone (image is a little old). She is a great mid-range ship with up close brawling capabilities that can literally melt faces. However, if you end up getting the feel for her, she can snipe a DD at 16km with relative ease, dodge torps or "dance" as I like to call it and gives you great flexibility as either a stand alone ship or as support. FYI: Stand alone meaning you deflect round after round and the enemy notices this, so they focus on your team, next thing you know, you're the only one left in the area - yup, been there too. She can hold her ground, works great for defending CP's when needed.

Check out UPK's video, he did a great job covering the majority.

Never say impossible in World of Warships, I've citadeled Bayerns close range before and it can be done, just not that easy. I fought against Bayerns, New Mexicos, and Arizonas before and to me they all seem equally difficult to citadel providing that they are angled. If anything, I'd say the Arizona is the toughest. The Arizona may be slow but it has the most hp of the tier and 25mm armor plates pretty much cover the entire side of the ship even before you reach the 13.5 in armor belt. The Bayern may be better at fighting at close range because of the secondaries and 15 in guns but I think the Arizona has the best endurance of the tier at any range.

Sad how people on the forums constantly use premium ships with their advantages as a baseline that the USN ships are comparable to the KM. Actually illustrates how bad a spot the tree line ships are when people use the Arizona with it's high sigma guns in their arguments.

For the massively superior AA this thing supposedly has, it sure doesnt shoot down planes.  Its honestly WORSE then the Arizona.  My Arizona has shot down 160 planes in 129 games.  My NM cant shoot down a plane to save its life.  It has them fly all over above it and nothing...

NM is a pretty good one though.  Guess T6 is the USN shining light section, the rest is meh.
