Treated myself to a Christmas gift by getting a German battleship. I haven't played it yet but I want to know some tips and trick regarding how to play it, its equipment load, recommended captain skills, and more. Thank you and Merry Christmas!

Scharnhorst is not a Pocket Battleship.

Graf Spee is a Pocket Battleship.

Your standard Battleship modules and German BB captain skills are fine for her.

You play her like a large aggressive cruiser. Shoot AP at CA and Broadside BB's, HE at angled BB's.

You being in torpedo range is a nightmare scenario for most BB's.

Your bow armor can be over matched, so angle and try to bait enemy BB's to shoot at your 350mm of side armor.

FYI, Scharnhorst is not the "Pocket Battleship". She's a full up battleship, the ship you were looking for was Graf Spee. Scharnhorst, you play her like a big cruiser with a lot of armor. Use HE at long range to burn other BBs to the ground and to wreck DDs. Use AP on up close BBs and cruisers. don't forget those torps in close range situations.

Scharnhorst is an up close in your face brawler, and eventhough she doesn't go as far as bismarck, upgrade those secondaries. You can still get an impressive 7km out of them which combined with the torps makes a very good up close brawling ship.

Learn what angles are and why you should be sailing in them relative to your opponents.

Scharnhorst can brawl relatively well thanks to turtleback and torpedoes.  Also your 283 mm guns are more devastating to BBs at close ranges.  Just don't overextend.  She's fast and it's easy to do.

Aside from that, she's a good cruiser hunter with good speed and reload.  Play accordingly.

Oh Hells NO!

Thanks to some dumb*** reporter in England, we will forever have to live with the uninformed thinking "pocket battlship" is an actual class of ship.

Once you figure out that you are an oversized cruiser, with battleship armor, it will click.

If you try to play like most NA players do in other battleships... (Staying away from the fight) You will get nowhere.

Well, back then expressions like "lolbad", "top kek", "stoopids forgot to armor their BB", etc. were not in yet, and most other expressions that seem appropriate for the situation were a big no-no for printing in a newspaper. So, coining the term "pocket battleship" wasn't such a bad idea, given their options. :)

Yup, play the Scharnhorst like a BB - because it is.  It is my absolute favorite ship in the game.  It's my second-highest damage/game ship (Montana is #1 with only 4k/game more in half as many games).

Make sure you get Basics of Survivability and mount any flags that reduce fire extinguish/consumable reloads.  Mount any premium repair parties you have.

I've got my specced for secondaries and I just LOVE IT.

Thank you all for the replies, and I will play it like a large cruiser. I have played 2 games in it and I like it although both times there were plenty of carries that love to feast on battleships. Going to watch the videos linked now. Merry Christmas!

Here is my how to video and review of the ship. Not as funny as ATSF/Euro but another video to watch for more tips.
