I've been wracking my brain trying to figure out exactly why the German DD's are so utterly crap to play. A few of the most recent nerfs jump to mind, but it seems like there is more to it than that. 

 

Personally I've been playing without free XP, grinding up from Tier 2. Currently I'm at Tier 7. Seems like the 5, 6, and 7 all suffer from near-constant, crippling hits to the engine, rudder, and weaponry. I quite regularly have a short scrape with a cruiser and from maybe two volleys of hits, I will have somewhere between 3 to 5 modules knocked out. So bad that it seems like in about half of my matches, I am fighting critical engagements in close scraps with my rudder and / or engine knocked out for a greater period of time than it is actually functional. I can't imagine playing the Maass without Last Stand. You'd be turned into an immobile, burning hulk in seconds. 

 

For me it's that problem and the utterly massive amount of damage these destroyers seem to take from AP.

Pretty much my experience. They just aren't worth the effort it takes to get damage out of it. Started taking the T5 T-22 into Random matches. It's just awful. The torps are ok but stealth torping isn't possible without a 15 point captain. The base detect ranges are too high, the detect when you fire is silly stupid, the smoke screen time needs to be 90 sec, etc etc etc

It's hard to even figure out a roll for this line to follow.

 

At least one that's "different" than the others.

I think she needs to see some buffs to her AP ricochet angles and fuse timers. 

 

And some HE raw damage would help.

You should watch Notsers recent video about German dds. He says that its best to play them ad torpedo boats and use torps as often as you can and apparently it's working for him.

You could do the same with IJN DD and have better concealment, longer range torps, longer lasting smoke and guns that are more reliable.

I'm pretty sure I was not comparing which one is better or worse. All I said was that a community contributor after a bit of testing found that this playstyle works. 

 

More reliable guns on IJN DDs is questionable, though.

Everything WG touches these days is a disappointment: UK RN CLs, IJN DDs, and now German DDs . . .

Just how much disappointment are we to take? Can't they figure out what to do right? Have they lost their mojo?

All the hype and all we ever get is mediocrity or worse

I don't even know where to begin fixing stuff, and I don't really care much anymore

More reliable guns on IJN DDs is questionable, though.

 

I wasn't comparing so much as pointing out / asking why we need another line that does everything worse than the existing lines. Yes you can do that with KM DD, but IJN DD are better at it so why do we need them?

 

The only people who question it are the ones who refuse to use them.

I wasn't going to grind the line until I ended up completely upgrading the V-25. Stock it is pretty weak. Upgraded it's pretty decent. Got the G-101 pretty easily. Seems to be the same thing. I now have it fully upgraded and it's just fine. But as was suggested, I use torps as my primary weapon and as soon as I shoot them I switch to HE and start fires. Works pretty well. Once torps are reloaded, go at it again with them. Folks need to understand that each country's ships have their own distinct play style. Instead of dragging out the buff-nerf bat like they do in World of Tanks, learn how to use it effectively. Instead of trying to force the ship to adapt to you, you need to adapt to the ship. Destroyers, especially, are not "generic". Try a different play style and you may be pleasantly surprised.

Well tbh I love the German DD line, yeah I understand the issues when it comes to the detectability range when you fire. And that is the only thing that seems to high to be truly effective. Instead of having like 15km when firing make it like 12,5 or 13k, That way it can't do the stealth firing and it is still effective.

 

But yeah the German DD line is hard to figure out. I play it like a gunboat and just keep evading incoming shots and when torps are loaded I go into stealth mode by not shooting, shoot my torps at close targets, maybe pop smoke depending how close they are and then keep shooting. I've noticed the most effective shots are AP on the side of ships and HE when facing forward ships. But like I said they are a hard line to figure out. You will die often but it's a great anti dd ship. Use your AP against other dd's and you own them. Don't worry about torps vs dd's. But this is my experience, other people might have different opinions. Btw I run a gunboat setup with uhm 11 point crew so no camo as of yet.
