So I wouldnt really worry about it. Also you realize there is a mod that shows you what direction the ship is facing, Im not sure which one it is, but its all over the videos on youtube. It even shows last known position when they disappear from view. Using that and watching the direction of the smoke tells you entirely which way he's going or just sitting still.
