Once again I do well with a ship many say quite a number of varied and rude things about...

Ninth Random battle in Emerald; 2nd battle since the hull and torpedo upgrade; first since the gun upgrade. 10 point captain, (formerly of Campbeltown,) BFT, EM, TAE, LS, V.

Standard Battle on Solomons. Went south to help a Nicholas at the South Cape, and we both got chased away by an enemy mob. Back north, shooting as opportunity permitted. Tried to help a New York guarding the gap, but was too late. Still shooting and not doing much, got hammered, then helped an Aoba against a New York in the north. Finally realized we were being capped and headed back south.

At this point I was at maybe 40% health, including heals. Considering there was a Kongo and another New York within 12k or so, I expected to be deleted an concentrated on the Mutsuki. Stopped to spam my torps at the Kongo, then went back to the Mut. It sank, then I turned to watch the torps sail right into the Kongo for a Double Strike.

I'm not sure; but I wonder if the clustered, single-fire torp swarm confuses people into thinking there's fewer torps, and it isn't that much to worry about?

By now I'm down to about 20% or less health, popped my two puffs of smoke, and momentarily broke contact. Last repair, torps reload, and back in.. After all; it's not like a 'terrible' ship like Emerald should expect to survive a close encounter with yet another battleship...

New York was smart, he was turning away, and my initial torp swarm mostly missed, but it let me get closer while his guns were trying to get on, and the torps from the other side did the job.

Just me and the enemy CV left, but not enough time to do anything. Oh well...

At one point the CV tried to torp me... I think... I heard the warning alarm; saw two torp tracks I couldn't avoid... and nothing... I can only suppose the launch happened closer than I thought, or the torps reached me just as their range ran out.

Guess all my losses this weekend were enough of an offering to be granted a great game like this;

One green player asked in chat; "Holy... How many torps does Emerald have???" and was answered by a red player; "Enough."

This was stuff the actual Derpski was supposed to be able to do; but which I never managed to accomplish; I was glad to be rid of the thing.

Is it still clubbing when you can get insta-deleted by anyone who gives you a cross look?

Only used my smoke once, but used up all three hydro shots. The last few minutes of the game I was dead meat to anyone who could have landed a decent shot, and it was fought at ranges of 10k and less.

Supposedly great ships like Benson, Atago, Cleveland, and others I can't use worth spit. Things like Emerald, Marblehead, Mutsuki, Colorado and Warspite I think I do well in; and occasionally manage to have have great games like this...

Mystery of the Universe I guess.

I didn't enjoy Emerald and frankly most of that was because I didn't do well in her.

Now I know it was me and not the ship, which is ok because I don't do well in every ship.

So congratulations; I'm glad someone can do something good in her, cuz I sure can't.

(I do have a 65% win rate in random in Mikasa tho, LOL, which is just hilarious)

I enjoyed Fiji and Edinburg much more than I did Emerald.

Guess that's why we have so many different ships.

Just a tip when it comes to dodging CVs with British CLs: you accelerate so stupidly fast that you can slow down to bait out a drop then firewall the throttle once the planes are in their attack run.  It works really well against auto-drops, and simply doing EXTREME ULTRA SUPER-LATE BRAKING usually foils manual drops because the CV driver doesn't expect it when they're lining up.

That is why I rarely take a torp now. In any ship.

I'm happy to see someone else that appreciated her.  I straight murdered people in Emerald, really enjoyed her.

Sounds like you had fun. No doubt Emerald is a difficult ship to adjust to, but she's a lot of fun when she 'clicks'.

Little secret, she pretty good at AA too ( 10 plane kills....twice)

I know most people will disagree with me, but I actually think the tier II-IV RN CL's are fine. Difficult to play but fine.

The Emerald is bad, she's massive with terrible gun placement. Even so I've managed to get nice stats in her (though only 15 games).

She's exhilarating to play, you're always dancing on the knife edge of being killed immediately in one salvo, yet she has a few surprises to make her fun despite that.

Kudo's on making her work for you.

Oh I also got the " how many torps does she have" question. My answer, "A few...."

I liked the Emerald and I did well in it too. The problem was it was mostly an uphill battle when most of the games ended up being tier 7 matches.

Problems with Emerald are possibly threefold -

1) An outright bad ship

2) Bad matchmaking

3) Perceptions of experienced players (who disproportionately post here), subconsciously used to the power of higher-tier ships think it's even worse than it is.

Variety's the spice of life though, and the ship does at least add to that. Probably worth including the odd Emerald in the game every now and then.

I too am a fan of ships people hate, and hater of ships people tend to love. Just the way I play I guess.

Emerald was a fun ship to me. Yea, I wasn't crazy good in it, but was out of her in 14 games, which is the fastest I was out of any tier 5.
