So, I finished everything with the ARP missions, and checked my Yokosuka port to take a look at my ARP ships and commanders (I don't really use ARP ships). I noticed something that was a little odd. Not sure if this is an easter egg, a prank, or a developer boo-boo, but it's there nonetheless. Check it out.

In the story Chihaya Gunzou and Iona operate a submarine. There are no submarines in WoWS, and all that is is just a reference to the source material.

Who knows though, subs might be in secret development, but not completed before the ARP collaboration ended this year. It's interesting to see that the i-401 would be a tier 9 IJN sub.

Ah, ok, that makes sense. I don't play the game for the anime part of it, so if that's part of the story, this is the first I'm hearing of it

There was an TXI I-401 Submarine (with that icon) likely intended for some ARP mode (WG mentioned wanting to try and get out a possible boss/ARP mode way back in Feb/March) in the game files and visible in the extended tree mod for the Arpeggio tree, but it never panned out due to other issues that arose, such as the RNCL line and IJN DD lines (maybe submarine functionality issues as well, given WG changed their tune about "No Subs" midway through the year to "we 'might' add subs eventually, but not now").  Gunzou and Iona were originally supposed to be helming the ship.

 

Still, the fact WG at least went far enough to model the sub, skin it, then capture it for the inset icon showed they had something planned.  And someone (on the Asia server?) managed to rip the I-401 model from the files and replace the catapult planes with it.  Was pretty funny seeing a submarine going blimp mode.

Looking forward to the anime collaboration coming next year.  Hope we get Haifuri Graf Spee towards the end of it.

 

In the meantime, I don't mind another Hiei, a special Kagerou, and maybe one or two other ships.

The REAL I-400/I-401 were aircraft carrying submarines, developed under the order of Yamamoto himself.

Their purpose was to smash the Panama Canal and harass distant shipping.

Knowledge of these ships was a complete surprise to the Allies since they couldn't figure out what the Sen Toku class was all about.

-- The dual hull design was ingenious.  It was basically two submarines, welded together.

Details of some of the internal mechanisms found on these ships are still classified.

Think of it like the research on chemical and biological warfare...  It's not knowledge you'd want to make public.

At any rate, the Haifuri ships are more conventionally painted, so less angst from players on that part alone.

 

I really just hope we get Harekaze with all 3 gun types.
