Does Furutaka reflect the rest of the IJN CA Line?

Just had several great games in my Furious Taco and would like to know if my experiences with it are similar to the rest of the line. My ultimate goal is to get the Zao (maybe) but I understand that she's probably in a league all her own. What about the tier 5-9 CAs? Do they play and perform similarly to Furutaka?

Furutaka teaches you what you'll need all the way up to T8. Your citadel is gigantic and poorly defended, your torpedo arcs will only get worse from there on, your speed is good but maneuverability won't improve at all, your heavier guns fire slow and you require to be deadly accurate with them to rack up damage.

 

Ibuki and Zao are their own thing since the meta changes a lot at top tier and you get access to invisible firing shenanigans and are much more forgiving thanks to the module range.

The ARP Myokos you've undoubtedly gathered by now are very indicative of the rest of the line. Aoba is like a refined Furutaka, Myoko plays like the ARP Myokos, Mogami is a refinement on that, so's Ibuki, and Zao's just troll.

Furutaka's gun caliber advantage doesn't last on her successors at T7+, but all that does is force you to be more aware of incoming fire.  The ships play about the same until Zao, unless you want to use 155 Mogami.  Ibuki has extra options with stealth, but the Furutaka's basic embodiment of how to play an IJN CA doesn't change until the railguns of Zao.

As Bunny said, the Futurama is the CA learning ship in the Japanese line. The US doesn't get that until tier 7 with the Pepsicola. Drive it like a black lab trying to figure out which ball to chase when the tennis ball factory blows up.

You still earn them, you just don't see them if you don't have Yokosuka turned on.

 

Why is Zao so troll?

 

Combination of powerful torpedoes, armor, speed, accurate guns, very good HE shells and fire chance, firing range and stealth.

I remember the old Furutaka and the gun arrangement....took some getting use to, but in certain situations it was great...love the C hull (Aoba lite...lol)

Aoba has a slightly higher RoF

both fun except when in a +2 battle

The playstyle is a little different, but the guns are the same caliber [fully upgraded] til T10

I would say Furutaka, Aoba, and Myoko all share the role of cruiser hunters. Furutaka and Aoba have the largest CA guns of their respective tiers, so this is no surprise. Myoko gets some competition for gun caliber with the USN and KM lines getting 8 inch guns, but she still has an edge with higher DPM and a high HP. 

Mogami and Ibuki kinda lose this capability to duel other cruisers successfully, because their AP penetration is not as good as some of their counterparts. Their playstyle turns a bit more passive, and a large portion of your damage will come from HE and fires. 

I have not played Zao yet, but from what i know, her playstyle is similar to that of Ibuki, so you're going to be doing a significant amount of HE spam from long distance. This is partially because she has the lowest HP of all the T10 CAs. However, Zao gets new AP shells that have good penetration, so she should be a bit more capable of dealing with cruisers than Ibuki.
