Hello all,

I'm a new player, referred by a friend who I play World of Tanks with.

Nice to be trying something new.

I'm interested in buying the Dunkirque and - when it comes out - the Arizona.

Q:  What makes the most economic sense:  buy them individually from the store, or get a supply of gold and get them that way?

Q: Do the bundles make any economic sense?

Thanks for the help. I've looked over the deals and done some math, but they don't make it easy...

How fast do you want the Dunkerque?

First of all, I don't think that it's currently sold in-game, so buying it with doubloons shouldn't work.

So first you need to wait for it to shuffle into the store lineup.  Second you will need to wait for a sale on doubloons (bi-weekly with different payment methods).  Third you will need to wait for the ship to go on sale in store (generally on major holidays).  But that would be the cheapest even if it may require a significant wait.

Bundles only really make sense if you were planning to buy the other stuff in the bundle.  Personally, I haven't ever bought credits from the premium store and I'm currently sitting on 200 million credits from the premium ships that I play, so the included credits would be wasted money.  Most of the other stuff in the Dunkerque bundle can be purchased with credits.  So you'll just need to play a bunch of games.

So economically, I would buy the standalone ship, and a 30 day premium time separately.  That'd give me 23-27 more days of premium in which to play for about the same price as the Dunkerque fully loaded bundle.

Ah...but this option doesn't include the doubloons.  I dunno, I find premium time more useful than doubloons.

I would advise against buying any premium ship until you have reached that tier in that class of ship and have read multiple reviews of that ship.

With that said I don't think most of the bundles are a good economic choice and I would steer well clear of Dunkerque until you are very experienced with the game as it may look simple but is quite a difficult ship to play. From what I understand Arizona is just a slightly different New Mexico which is a great ship in its own way and much more nice to new players.

Definitely buy a premium ship; unlike World of Tanks premiums, they are often as good or better than their same-tier counterparts. It's possible to play and enjoy this game without worrying about tech-tree progression at all, especially since there is no benefit and many drawbacks to playing at Tier 10. If you are not comfortable playing at the tier you bought into and don't mind having to relearn a few bad habits, Warships also has a co-op mode against bots that you can use to learn the mechanics of your ship (speed, turning radius, shell velocity, damage potential, durability etc).

As for the ships you asked about, it seems that many folks struggle in the Dunkerque, and as it is currently the only French ship it will not be suitable for training up a captain for other boats. I've heard the Arizona, on the other hand, is a fine Tier 6 battleship, despite the fact that Tier 6 ships are uptiered a bunch in the current meta.

Another option is the Scharnhorst, which is a durable and fun brawler in a tier where it is often top boat. I'm not sure if any of these ships are available to purchase with Doubloons, so a paid transaction from the store may be your only choice.

Thanks folks.   Solid advice.  I have played a bit with my friends account on the Tier 6 a bit, and done some reading.  I know the Dunkirque takes finesse and a learning curve. But I think it will suit my "second line" play-style, and I would not like to wait a year for it to come around again.

But the cautions I well understand and are appreciated.

Thanks!

Looks to me like you really want that Dunkerque, and I don't blame you - it's a cool and in many ways unique ship. I'll leave you with a final piece of advice then: if you do end up getting smashed in Randoms, don't get discouraged; I found it an excellent ride in Ranked last season and plan on using it again to get to 15 next time as well.

If you're looking to buy the Dunkerque, then watch this first. If you don't like what you see the second time you watch it (because the first time you'll be laughing your rear end off), then buy the Arizona.

She has come up twice in the last few months. I don't think you will have a wait a year if you pass this time. I would REALLY play for awhile before buying your first Tier 6.

I agree with most... premiums are great in that you get to play that tier right now... but they are also not so great if you dont have the skills yet to compete at the tier.

I really enjoyed my dunkerque... and i too used it for ranked. worked well. But then i found the leander even more useful for tier 6 ranked.

If you learn how to use the dunk she is a brute....

Probably should play battleships and reach t6 before buying a t6 BB, jut to see if you even like the playstyle.

The problem with Dunk though is that there is no similar ship to compare it against; the closest is Izumo and she's at T9 of the IJN line.

Arizona at least has New Mexico.

Tirpitz at least has Bismarck.

Scharnhorst at least has Gneisenau.

Texas at least has New York (and Texas should be auto-rewarded to the OP if they used a referral link and hit T6 in any line).

I do agree that OP should consider playing some BB lines, but the closest that Dunk can potentially share some similarities with is the IJN BB line currently, on the grounds that angling is a must, IJN BBs are pretty squishy when broadside, and the IJN BBs have similar accuracy to Dunk.  Though one could make a case of the KM BB line being similar in terms of gun velocity and traverse instead.

If you haven’t come across this yet, it recommend reading LWM’s review of the Dunkerque. It’s thorough and comprehensive, and it should allow you to fairly gauge what to expect from that unique battleship.

Okay: I picked up the Dunkerque and I'm enjoying it.   Playing too tentatively, but at least adding to the fray.  It seems a good fit for for me as I learn,  as I always know which way ALL my guns are pointing. This is just one less thing to think about and makes multitasking easier.

Captain's skills will take a while. Still working on how to array the ship so it best supports the fleet. Sit back for a while, then close, or what.

Glad your having fun with her...that came out wrong...you know what I mean...anyway, I don't have one, but I've seen two of them get a kraken in the last couple weeks... Something about her, but not sure what. I think I want one...

You sound like a level-headed player. What are you doing here in the salt mines. Only whiners are allowed here.

All kidding aside.

The Dunkirque, or DankMeme, is a fine ship, just not the most competitive and takes and experienced hand, but is nonetheless fun to play. I recommend getting it when you can, even if it sits in your port for a time while you work your way to tier VI. Hell, buy her and play Co-Op with her. No pressure to perform there.

Welcome to Floaty Boats.

Good luck and fair seas.

You'll get more entertainment bang with a premium cruiser.

As a newcomer, most will tell you to avoid Atlanta for now.

The Tirpitz and Atago draws everyone, and they soon learn to master the lower tiers first.

Get a feel for the game via the tech tree offerings.

I'd recommend keeping at least 6000 gold doubloons on hand in your game port for the occasional offer.

When I started with my first premium, it was the Murmansk...next came Atlanta.

If the Indianapolis had been available at that time, in retrospect, that boat would have been my first purchase.

Warspite is a favorite for some, including me..but its a two-edged trick.

A trick to master.

A trick against any opponent.

Welcome aboard- Seasons Greetings

The reviews were very accurate: don't expect to do top damage but rarely.  It isn't that type of ship.

One thing I noticed was: she isn't as fragile as she may seem, due to her speed I think.  Last battle I was hit 3 times by air bombers, then bracketed by three ships at distance over the course of 2 minutes; but I managed to slip behind the island and sink the carrier.      Also: in a knifefight I can count on the three rear mounted quad secondariness to finish off a ship while I turn into another that needs attention with the mains.

She shoots down planes relatively well: 5 kills in that game.

I'm not sure if the spotter plane is worth it, as it is only up for a minute. I may go back to the fighter for a bit of protection.
