So finally got the Yamato and I'm doing terrible in it.   Normally I'm at the top of team performance post battle stats, but with this beast I'm usually middle or worse.  I've only had it for a bit over 24 hours now but I've tried secondary load out, main gun load out, I've tried sniping, brawling, and medium range.  Most of the hits seem to be over pens with little damage I'm getting very few full damage hits, or citadels.

Is this normal for the Yamat?   So far I prefer the lower tier ships to it.

According to your stats, you've never helmed a tier 9 Battleship.  That could be your first problem, since the ships at tier 9 introduce the maneuvering capabilities of the tier 10 ships.  It may also be true that you don't have enough experience in Tier 10 matches since your ceiling is tier 8.  Not only that, counting all the battles you've had in IJN Battleships, you've only had 73 overall in the line.  That's just not enough experience to properly helm a Yamato against players that have had several hundred battles in their respective lines.

What ever you do, do not reverse bow camp in your Yamato, unless you really have no choice. That is just a sign of a bad player and you do not want to be seen as one.

Yams is a good ship.  I won't go on and on about her strengths.  She does have her quirks as do most T10 BBs.

imho and only that.

Her turret rotation is very very slow.

Close quarters combat is very tricky.

You would think it would be easier to disintegrate cruisers with her.  Something Amagi does very well.

Dodging torpedoes is more difficult compared other IJN BBs.

She seems to take extra HE and fire damage.  If for no other reason she is a huge ship.  Close range HE from cruisers and DDs will always find their mark.

She has a great deal of game hype to live up.

She has a higher skill threshold requirement than other lower tier BBs.

She is unable to stop an attacking squadron of T-9 T-10 planes with her AA.

Just play her more and discover how to compensate for her shortcomings with your play style.

Yea I skipped the 9 as my Christmas present to myself.  Thus is the only 10 battleship I wanted. Have the Zao and love her but really wanted the Yamato I'll figure it out, it may be the other players are just that much better at tear 10 but I'm my Zao it's not an issue.  I've been playing since beta so have a little bit of experience but it's obviously not enough.

You should have played Izumo, as she's not as bad as she was.

I usually try not to skip any ships past T6... plus saving up for Missouri. :)

May want to watch Notser, Jingles or Business6 videos on the Yamato or Izumo. I had noticed them on the videos using HE to great effect to CA's. Even getting citadels. Your comment on overpens is telling me that might be the issue. 18.1" AP shells just penetrating through w/o exploding. Your ammo selection and where you are targeting might be the issue. I once fired an Amagi's full AP salvo into an angled Bismark' belt line @ 5 km range. 1 penetrated but not a cit and the rest bounced. For all targets, you might want to use HE as the default. Switch to AP if for BB"s and if the belt line hits are not penetrating, go for the turrets.

I believe ichase one stated that if you ever equip HE on the Yamato, it's time to uninstall the game for being a noob scrub.

If a 16" AP overpens on a dd, no reason to expect a 18.1" AP to work differently. Plus if the other reviewers like business6 is using HE to cit CA's on an Izumo, no reason to think it won't work on a Yamato.

The problem I find in the Yamato is that everyone is shooting at you :/

Even if you citadel with a HE shell, you wont get the devastating 14,800 damage each 18.1" AP shell provides.  The Yamato has a vast secondary battery that makes switching to HE mostly unnecessary, hitting a DD with a AP Yamato salvo would cause considerable damage anyway.  Only use it if a DD or possibly a CV is your only target.

Curse you Ackbar!  Concentrating fire like that!

Yamato = Careful what you wish for.

I just bow-on bum-rushed a camping red Yamato hiding behind a mountainous island with my Iowa.  With bit support from a friendly DD I pushed her driver to reverse. The Yamato quickly died after 3 or 4 salvos... and next I killed the red DD that was supporting the Yamato while I was there.

I had the highest score on my team but we lost anyway.

Ironically, earlier while I was using my stealth build to flank the reds, a teammate was yelling at me in chat for not being aggressive enough... go figure.

I suggested going for HE against bow-forward battleships in the Izumo and Yamato depending on the situation.  I have no hesitation suggesting to do so because damage per minute is drastically reduced against a Yamato when you're using AP against one that is bow-forward.  Switching to HE at least provides some damage, module destruction and fire potential.  That can have a resounding effect in the span of a couple of salvos.  In an Izumo I was able to dump a 20k HE salvo against a bow-forward Yamato while starting a double fire and nuking his AA.  I thought that was pretty damn funny.

And that's awful advice.  HE has its place with battleships, even a Yamato.
