Dunkerque MORE! and some advice for DDs

Just sharing some fun games I had last night in the mighty Dunquerque.   6 games, 65K+ average, 1990+ avg XP and 83% win rate. Just love this ship, HE that does a lot of damage and can set fires well.  AP that can pen a broadside CA or sometimes a BB. (don't bother if head on)  Great speed and bow on guns, which are fantastic to run down enemy CAs, CVs and charge smoked DDs.  Oh and for the 4 DDs out there that insist on chasing a Dunquerque, beware of some pretty good secondaries (no T5 skill yet).  Its a mini Izumo!  So word to the wise DD player, don't chase this ship to try and torp it (which doesn't work very well against most ships BTW) just say no...ummm yes! (lol)  I use spotter, instead of fighter now, and love getting in some early hits.   The Dunkerque's main enemies are up tiered BBs, the armor really doesn't hold up well vs larger caliber AP.  Having fun with my favorite ship right now...

If you haven't run into one yet, beware the Warspite. She can citadel the Dunk through the bow. Seen it happen. 

 

But yeah, Dunk is a fine ship so long as you keep your broadsides away from enemy BBs. I know when I play a BB and see a broadside Dunk, I'm'a shoot it.

NOoo don't you dare!!  Any how, I like to get to part of the map where a side of my ship is screened by an island, then try and bow on as much as possible.  Most maps allow for this.  Use speed to reposition to next threatened area.  I don't seem to get citadeled much, but like I said bigger tiered BBs really are this ships bane, even bow on.

Yup, that's the way to play her. And don't forget to full reverse and load HE when a Tirpitz tries to charge you down for a torpedo run. It's pretty hilarious. I should know. I was that Tirpitz once.

Its funny, the reviews were so-so on her, but everybody who has one seems to like her...  Not bashing anybody's opinion, just my observation... Nice games!

She's a great tier 6 battleship... I can make her work too sometimes...

Dunk is now statistically my best tier 6 BB, overtaking Fuso. It's really fun and very unique. Point your French riot shield at the enemy and laugh as the enemy gives you more credits with their bounces, while you poke them with 100% of your firepower.

 

Whilst Dunk can be penetrated through the bow, in my experience it's not actually that big of a problem. Thing is that the majority of players in this game are the casual crowd and simply aren't that great, and when faced with a relatively rare bow on Dunkerque I find that a lot of people don't really know what to do with it. I remember a match where I had 2 broadside Scharnhorsts firing AP at my bow reversing Dunk while I was leisurely picking apart their sides. A phenomenon I've also noticed in my play is that if there are other targets to shoot at, after bouncing a few times off Dunkerque, the enemy will get fed up and switch targets.

 

To threaten to citadel a Dunkerque from head on, the other guys needs to be knowledgeable about Dunk's weakness, have both ships actually meet to fight, have a ship with 15 inch guns or better, and have good RNG on the dispersion. I can't say I meet that combination often when I've played Dunkerque.

Yeah, I've even noticed that CVs just love the target the Dunkerque no matter what.  "Huh, that Dunkerque just shot down all my fighters and dive bombers, BETTER SEND MORE PLANES AT IT!" or that they'll just park planes at the edge of my AA zone and just leave them there, never getting the clue that my Dunkerque actually has good AA.

Also dueled a Warspite in this replay, I prioritized it as a target and dealt plenty of damage outside of the Warspite's range and made sure to keep a rock in-between me and those 15" guns.  In essence, I have to adopt cruiser tactics when dealing with a Warspite, which isn't hard.

The Dunk is actually amazingly good.  I think what you have is players who bought her have learned how to play her.  And as it's a different BB to play, opponents don't always know how to fight her well.  I've destroyed Bismarks in the Dunk.  Its all about how you handle the ship, like any ship in the game.  Play her to her strengths and you'll generally have a good game.

My secondaries aren't very reliable against DD's.  That said, I generally crush them with my main guns.  It's almost criminal how the ship slides around spreads of torps.

My max dmg with the dunkerque is around 190k, its a hell of a ship if played right. But I have to come clean, when I play CVs the dunkerque is almost always the first ship I delete.

Agreed, though Scharnhorst just encourages every stupid impulse I've ever had playing this game.

 

Also, wiping a red ship allows me to type, "Get Franced!" in all chat.

One does not simply bow-on in Dunkek. She's one of two ships in the game with a touch of battlecruiser in the design DNA, and it shows in-game. When I play her, I'm continuously transitioning between battleship and cruiser tactics.
