Yup!

You sacrifice your torp traverse space for longer range, faster reload and better survivability.

A very competitive cruiser as long as you keep wiggling and shooting

Juts got mine last night, I've been holding off since everyone says the furutaka is better but to me the Aoba just seems to hit harder and is alot easier, it also don't seem as fragile, ask the scharnhorst who ran from me and gave me an arsonist badge because I kept bouncing his AP since I was angled  nose on to him as he ran away and toasted his butt.

Yes and yes.
The RoF in insanely good(5.5rpm), the AA is better...

The only downside is the torpedo arcs on great. You can only fire at targets aft of your amidships.

Long story short, Aoba is epic. Probably not as big of an upgrade as she used to be, since Furutaka has the C-hull now, but she's awesome. Imo, she's the best tier VI cruiser.

But that's my opinion, opinions vary player to player

Yeah, definitely feels quite tanky. I remember angling and bouncing 14in AP in my first ranked season... I kinda miss her now XD

Aoba is very good, and better than Furutaka (itself a good ship). The torp arcs are not as good, but it is so in the rest of the line (except the special case of Atago/Takao).

Myoko is the jewel of the line, with Mogami and Ibuki being good, but not as much for the tier; (Mogami was before the nerf though). Zao at T10 is awesome but a different beast.

Aoba/Myoko/Mogami are similar in function. Learn one, learn them all. I kept Myoko as the best one of the three.

Enjoy Aoba. Learn to play it well. It will reward you, and teach you how to drive IJN CAs.

Perfectly said.

Just be careful using those torpedoes, as they force you to show full broadside to be able to bring them to bear.

Also at this stage people expects your aft to be spewing torps, so don't depend on them to do damage.

They are more of a support armament for you to intimidate your enemies while you retreat.

I never was really into cruisers. I main bbs. but, the Aoba is going to be a keeper. fully upgraded with the steering mod she Bob and weaves every where. had a 117k damage and outran independence torpedo launched at me. with de and flags she has a 21% fire chance. she is a great ship. I look forward to the myoko.

Haven't even tried Aoba. Only have the ARP Myokos... Unfortunately finding them to be as frustrating to use as the supposedly 'great' Atago; the only difference is I win in Atago, but do no damage; in the Myokos I can't win but do more damage.

Using those last night to train Kongo (the mental model) since there isn't an ARP T6 and the battleships are no good for the Takao mission... So much fun fighting T8s and T9s all night...

Thing starts fires like Myoko and Mog, just keep burning BBs and wiggling. Use the torps as an area denial, they

will flush out DDs lurking in open spaces and freak out BBs

Aoba is basically just a better Furutaka C hull at Tier 6.  The extra range and RoF is great

Like most IJN cruisers the Aoba has a glass jaw and is fairly easy to sink. Unlike most Japanese Cruisers it kicks like a mule and I highly recommend you learn the joy of switching shell types. Spamming HE in an Aoba is wasting its potential.

I am mostly a BB player but the Aoba is one of the three Cruisers that I actually keep in port. Solid ship and I hope you enjoy it.
