Elite ships setting for free XP

How do I set an Elite ship to generate free XP? or is the ONLY option to use $$ to convert XP?

all ships generate free XP and once a ship is Elite their ship Exp can be converted to Free XP with dubloons

And cannot switch XP to pure Captain XP either, I assume.....

Nope.  I asked that in the forum a bit ago.  Nyet was the response.
