Halloween Mode - Best Practices

Thought I'd jot down a few best practices for the purpose of helping folks understand how to approach the Halloween Event. Will update and edit as I get time and such.

IMPORTANT - This is an "Escort" mode of play. You have a ship (Transilvania) to escort to a specific point, and you must guard it while taking out land-based catapults and enemy AI ships.
***This is not a solo play mode. Being an awesome lone wolf will not serve you well here. Play as a team, and with your team at all times.***

- NO ship should move at the start until BBs enter the escort circle.

When the first ship enters the circle it will become engaged and the escort ship will begin to move toward its destination.
YOU WANT BOTH BBs TO FLANK THE SHIP YOU ARE ESCORTING, one per side

- Once BBs have engaged the zone and the ship starts moving everyone else should get going, and stay in a solid group throughout.

- Don't let enemy ships into the circle, and don't let everyone on the team leave the circle.

If the Transilvania stops because of either condition you fail one of the secondary objectives immediately

- HE spam ships if you're CA or DD

AP only for BBs on enemy ships

Try to stay more than 4km away from enemy ships, if you get inside that range you will be on fire as a result

- AP spam catapults for all ship types

- Flanks and front are main areas of fire
Catapults are ALWAYS the FIRST TARGET

Ships will spawn behind but are lower priority than flanks and front ships <---- Upon more play and feedback from many others that agree, you should completely ignore anything not directly in front of you or to your flanks. Period. The backspawn ships are just there to punish anyone not moving fast enough through the course.

- Three ships spawn once you get close to the end: Rasputin, England, and the Davis
Rasputin has 200k HP and is basically the boss - plan accordingly

Other two will spam death at you and the Transilvania

Other two will also try to ram if they get a chance, especially England. If they ram the Transilvania it will die. Plan accordingly as well.

Feel free to chime in and I'll update this accordingly. Sorry if someone already started this and I've just missed it but I didn't see one made yet for the new event.

I played 5 or so matches, and won 1. Despite that loss, we got close several times. I played as one of the Blades, and I begun using these tactics:

- Battleships should focus on the catapults, with their long range and big guns. Destroyers should focus mainly on enemy ships*, and cruisers do a little of both

* The ships that spawn behind Transilvania are slower than her, and will gradually fall behind. Unless they're at a certain range, I say ignore them.

- Teamwork and communication is key. I announced when I was dropping smoke, and encouraged others to do the same.

A final word of advice: When Rasputin arrives, stuff gets real. Focus on him, load up some Boney M in the speakers, and prepare to get funky.

Catapults are the priority, everyone shoot AP at them(yes DDs also).

EVERYONE(yes DDs also) in the Escort Circle, can not be stressed enough. You HAVE to keep moving.

when Rasputin pops up focus on him.

Its not about how much you kill as a solo player.. you MUST work as a team.

You have some great info above.. These are the basics i wrote down for people.. Im loving this event.. its really not hard if you can get people to work together... :)

1. Stay in Circle at all times..

2. Target the catapults first  (only after they are dead then focus on nearest ship) When you come up to new ones. stop shooting at ships and kill catapults first.

3. focus fire using f3 and target  the closest ship to the circle / the group

4. Do no hit or run into the Transylvania ship.

5. Do not torp your own players. (staying in the circle will help prevent this)

6 Dont worry about the ships behind u until they are all that is left.

Good luck Captains !!!

I found that staying 4KM away from the Zikasas made them not fire once I moved to within that distance they would engage normally. Also as the Blade stay more than 4Km away from these as they secondaries will get you (just like the Mikasa).

Oh man..this sounds pretty hard...

If you're on a team that has no idea what's going on, it's impossible. Generally I think most of these event types can be beaten even by bad teams if there is some luck involved, but in this game and this circumstance that is not the case.

If you're on a solid team that mostly understands the best practices you'll have a decent shot at it.

But yes, it is hard. Super fun, but hard.

Risk versus Reward, one of the basic tenants of WG .... failed.   Lots of very good gameplay with zero reward....

played 5 so far...no wins. Teams are clueless, don't stay with escort, and run off and yolodie or uselessly chase the ships that come from behind. Hopefully more players will read this and follow.

Strongly disagree. Waves will spawn way too fast and catapults will destroy you.

- NO ship should move at the start until BBs enter the escort circle.

Ships will spawn behind but are lower priority than flanks and front ships

These ships that spawn behind should NEVER be a priority. Any ship that targets these will usually be out of position if they survive soloing them, all the while the rest of the team is getting slaughtered without the help of those that broke ranks to deal with these meaningless backspawns.

You don't get more XP for sinking them. You don't get more credits for sinking them. They're a distraction to punish teams not moving continually forward. Stick with your team up front and leave these ships in the back alone.

Playing meteor magnet with the Blade is really fun and can be usefull when your team is clueless about focusing catapults.

Feels like...

It'd be nice if WOWS posted this kind of info somewhere THAT'S OBVIOUS. I played once so far and had little clue as to what I was doing or what was going on..besides being so dark I could hardly see anything. Is there more than this one mission? And I received zero points, creditsa, or anything after the battle except for 3 Halloween ship cammos. Is that the prize?

1) Agreed completely. It's a shame more publishers don't actually create guides for new events and instead rely on community driven stuff like this to suffice. I've been a GM at a different company and one of the things I very much enjoyed doing was creating game guides for this type of stuff to put on the homepage directly post-patch. To be super honest, it didn't take that much time out of my day and was quite helpful to our players.

2) Just one mission, but it has two varieties. Namely, the escorted ship can take the left path around the island or the right path. Other than that it's more or less a test of a new system (without them saying as much) that we get to have fun with.

3) You get credits, free XP, and can get a special medal as well as event camos.

The Zikasas will repair after 2 fires and can be lit up again after their repair finishes. So, as an Igor, I would start 2 fires, change targets and do the same, then come back to start fires on the first one. That combined with a few torps from Blades and the ship sinks. First time I played in Igor I got 9 kills due to fires I started and moved on to other targets.

Also, at the beginning, if DDs enter Transylvania's circle and the first catapult spawns on the south side of the island, the Transylvania will receive about 10-15k dmg which could have been avoided if the DDs avoid entering the circle first thing. If the first catapult to spawn is on the north side of the island, the Transylvania is safe from early catapult damage. Furthermore, the same DDs who enter the circle usually leave it before anyone else has a chance to enter to keep the Transylvania moving and thus failing a secondary objective right from the start.

Thanks for that info. Interesting..they're using us to test something to come later. Probably those shore batteries.
