360 Rion12 Members 2,072 posts 2,712 battles Report post #6 Posted October 19, 2016 (edited) The main thing Hydro can do that Radar cannot is expand torpedo detection ranges to the point where dodging the metal fish is about as trivial as dodging a battleship trying to ram your cruiser. It's more of a matter of being able to dodge DD attacks, as opposed to spotting the actual ships. Radar, on the other hand, is hands-down better for actually finding the small buggers due to its large detection ranges, but you don't get the benefit of increased torpedo detection. As far as it goes from a generalized standpoint, I'd probably give the edge to Radar, if only because it's more useful for actually removing the little ankle-biter from the equation and sufficient predictive capabilities can generally tell you where torpedoes will be coming from anyways. This goes double for if your target is a Russian or USN DD, since you're probably trying to flush them out of smoke or something, and they were probably more focused on their gun usage, making torpedoes somewhat less of a threat. At the end of the day, though, having a combination of both is by far the best thing you can get if you're really keen on killing the small tin cans. Radar is a offensive and situational skill Hydro can be used offensively and defensively and is a lot less situational through it's longer duration.

Radar has good range but low duration. They usually can actually hit DD's though because of their usually good shell velocity. Hydro is meh but way longer duration. Radar is fantastic when there are enemy ships hiding behind islands or in smoke and your friendly cruiser lights them up for you.

I'm not too worried about torps, more worried about killing the little ba$[edited]launching them. I take great joy in killing DDs, and I've gotten decent enough at dodging their torps that I don't feel a need to use hydro.
