Very nice work all around, Chase.  It's great to see a comprehensive explanation of armor penetration mechanics, since they differ so much from WoT.

Is there a place to see the air-drag variable for each ship?  Usually I use gamemodels3d, and that shows muzzle velocity, detonator time and shell weight, but not the air-drag.

I also think it's interesting that autobounce mechanics use a percentage per angle over 45 system to determine whether there's an overpen, with anything 60 or higher (after normalization) resulting in automatic bounce.  That is very different from WoT, which had 70 degree autobounce threshold, with any angle number under 70 creating a higher "effective armor" number that could be overcome by a sufficiently high penetration roll.

In WoWS, there's a chance a steep angle below autobounce will still result in autobounce.

I wonder sometimes whether 60 degrees is too low a number for autobounce.   I thought 70 in WoT was just right.  Then again, I suppose all balance has been built around the 60 degree number in WoWS (with bow armor numbers and such), so I don't see it changing any time soon.

Krupp was better explained and also detonator times were more detailed :)

I am very confused by the over-pen. I feel its too much. It impresses me by the thinner armor the better in game mechanic which does not make any sense to me.

Chase, I have a question for you about overmatch mechanics that I don't think has been fully explained.

We know that when a shell's caliber is more than 14.3 times greater than the nominal thickness of the armor being attacked, then all angle/penetration formulas are ignored and the armor is simply penetrated no matter what.  As a practical matter, that means that 25mm bows can confidently withstand up to 356mm guns (which cannot overmatch 25mm), and 32mm bows can confidently withstand all guns except the Yamato's 460mm (because you need 457.6 to overmatch 32, and the Yamato has the only gun in the game with a shell caliber that large).

Now, my question is this: Once you overmatch a bow, what happens to the penetrating power of the shell overmatching it?  On a Warspite, for instance, there is a very weak 152mm bulkhead behind the bow, which often leads to frontal citadels.  But is there some dropoff in a shell's penetrating power even if it DOES overmatch the bow?

It's a familiar principle from WoT that if a shell penetrates "spaced armor" in front of another, thicker, plate, the penetrating power falls off considerably, so that often the shell will fail to penetrate the subsequent plate.  Does this happen in WoWS as well?

Put another way, if an armor section is overmatched, is it as if the overmatched section did not exist for purposes of the shell's subsequent penetrating power?

Let's say a 406mm shell with a theoretical penetrating potential of 500mm hits the Warspite's bow.  Obviously, the 25mm bow is overmatched by the 406mm caliber.  Now, does the shell still retain its 500mm penetrating potential once it overmatches the bow?  Or does it fall to something lower than that?

Any insights on this would be appreciated, and thanks again.

There is some dropoff, unfortunately we're not sure by exactly how much. Testing with fnord and I seems to indicate some sort of decay curve or an exponential regression, but it's not a precise enough science for me to give specifics sadly.

Hey everybody,

During the month of September - October I'll be pretty much revamping every Captain's Academy episode I've ever made along with as much new information that applies to the game we love today. I will be updating this thread with all the latest videos as I'm done with them. So without much hesitating, here we go! :D

Episode 29 - Damage Saturation or Why Did I Do 0 Damage

Episode 28 - Overpenetration Mechanics & Penetration Mechanics II [Corrected]

Spoiler

Episode 27 - Citadels, Armour and Penetration Mechanics

Spoiler

Episode 26 - The Armour Viewer [Coming patch 0.5.11]

Spoiler

Hi, I have a question related to Cap. Acad. 28:

I went into the training room to try out the water-decreasing penetration thus leading to the citadel tactic, and I found it to be very hit and miss.(only one or two citadel hits at best with multiple ships)

Might our fine Canadian Youtuber be able to provide an answer to why this didn't work?

The more water the shell has to go through the more penetration is lost. So hitting only a tiny bit of water isn't enough sometimes. Sadly RNG does play a role here :(

Chase, these vids must have taken you a lot of time and effort. I found several of them especially on gunnery to be great! I like to understand how the mechanics work and you explained it well. Thanks for putting these vids up!
